Recap / Power Rangers Dino Charge S1E11 Break Out

Go To

The rangers are assisting Kendall with the Zandar exhibit, when suddenly guys in suits start to take the exhibits away. Kendall and the others attempt to stop them, before the ringleader introduces himself as the true Zandarian Prince: Philip III. He tells them that their impersonation of Zandarian royalty did not go unnoticed, and that they are not worthy to be in charge of any of these relics. He seizes the relics, including the Gold Energem, and leaves, with the rangers debating what to do about the Energem. They then notice Vivix hiding in the bushes, spying on the prince, and as the rangers race to catch up to him, the Vivix head into space to inform Sledge.

Sledge meanwhile is berating Fury on losing control of the Ptera Zord, however upon hearing that the Energem is in transit, he alongside Poisandra, Curio, Wrench and some Spikeballs head to Earth to reclaim the Energem. They reach Philip's convoy first, and demand the Energem in exchange for Philip's safety, which the latter agrees to. The rangers arrive too late, and the two groups battle, with Koda escorting the prince away from the violence. Fury, now empowered by the Energem is more than a match for the rangers, and calls on the Ptera Zord, who is now completely under his control since he possesses the Energem. Tyler summons the T-Rex zord and uses the new Dino Stretch Charger to ensnare the Ptera Zord and ground it, removing much of its aerial advantage.

As the Zords battle, Tyler and Fury duel, but suddenly, the Gold Spirit interacts with the Energem and is able to free itself. The spirit is an ancient knight, who merged with Fury unwillingly while protecting his young charge, the Prince of Zandar! The knight, Sir Ivan, retrieves the Gold Energem, and morphs, becoming the Gold Ranger. With his Ptera saber, he is able to make quick work of the enemy forces, and forces Fury into retreat. Enraged, Sledge enlarges his two Spikeballs to destroy the grounded Ptera Zord. While the others want to help, Ivan refuses, and engages the two Spikeballs using the Ptera Charge Megazord, having lost its cape in favor of a pair of swords. He is capable of dispatching the Spikeballs with ease, and the monsters are as he says "Vanquished"!

Afterwards, Ivan tries to give the Energem back to Philip, recognizing him as a Prince of Zandar, and pledges his loyalty to the crown once again. In response, Philip gives the stone back, saying that it belongs to the knight, not the prince, and for him to use it as he sees fit. While the prince and the rangers depart on good terms, Ivan is able to enjoy the first bit of freedom he has had in over 800 years.

Tropes used in this episode:

  • Early-Bird Cameo/ Foreshadowing: Prince Philip's first appearance in the series, and he is a fan of slate-grey suits...
  • Explain, Explain... Oh, Crap!: Riley tries to intervene when Philip 'steals' the exhibit, but realizes who he is talking to mid sentence.
  • Explosive Leash: Well not a leash but when Sir Ivan finally escaped Fury it created a big explosion as it were.
  • Heel–Face Turn: The Ptera Charge Megazord becomes good, throwing off its evil cape to reveal twin sabers.
  • Jerkass: Philip in his first scene is an extremely arrogant and snobby prince, and seems to hate being touched by 'commoners'. Especially Koda. He ends up getting ambushed by Fury, has his treasures stolen and loses his family heirloom to the very monster that attacked his ancestor. He even says he is humbled by the rangers' collective bravery and strength, and grants Ivan the Gold Energem to do as he sees fit.
  • Let's Get Dangerous!: Poisandra, Wrench and Curio join Fury in retrieving the Gold Energem from Prince Philip, and manage to go toe to toe with single rangers. The whole team however is another matter; and it gets even worse when they 'attempt' to take on Ivan, especially poor Wrench.
  • Prince and Pauper: Subverted. The Rangers realize that their plan from the previous episode, where Tyler pretends to be the Prince of Zandar, caught the attention and anger of the real prince.
  • Pregnant Badass: According to Koda, his mother.
  • Shock and Awe: Fury and later Sir Ivan.
  • Surprisingly Realistic Outcome: The televised impersonation of Zandar's royalty from the previous episode doesn't go unnoticed by the real prince of Zandar, whom, naturally, isn't very happy with the charade.
  • The Reveal: Sir Ivan is the gold spirit trapped within Fury for 8 centuries.
