Ash has his sights set on a rare and brightly-colored Noctowl, but this Pokémon's Hypnosis leaves Ash's team unable to tell reality from illusion, much less stand up to another Pokémon in battle.
Tropes
- Abnormal Limb Rotation Range: Dexter says Noctowl turns its head up to 180° when thinking. And our Shiny friend does this frequently.
- Blindfolded Vision: To counter Noctowl's hypnotism, Ash tells Pikachu to close his eyes and listen for Noctowl.
- Early-Installment Weirdness: If you come back expecting to hear the term "Shiny", don't hold your breath. The term "Shiny" doesn't become canon until Generation V.
- Gotta Have It, Gonna Steal It: When Team Rocket overhears Ash and Dr. Wiseman arguing over Wiseman's preferred tactics of trying to trap Noctowl, they assume the Shiny's rarity, and target it to give to Giovanni.
