Recap / Pokémon S19E31 "A Gaggle of Gadget Greatness!"

Go To

  • Berserk Button: Both Clemont and James react very flustered when their teammates question the productivity of the festival's gadgets.
  • Breather Episode: The last filler XY episode to enjoy before the marathon of the Kalos League arc and Team Flare arc begins.
  • Call-Back: The music for Team Rocket's device in the original Japanese is the music for their Sinnoh theme.
  • Filler: It has no bearings on the main plot, but what makes it notable is that it's the very last XY episode of this type. From this point onward, all episodes till the end of the XY series are heavily seralized.
  • Lost in Translation: The "N" on Meowth/Nyasuu's helmet remains unaltered in the English dub.
  • Rube Goldberg Device: This episode is swimming with these. But the ultimate one is Team Rocket's machine at the end. Here's what it does:
    1. A helmeted Meowth boards a seat and is pulled in.
    2. Meowth rolls into a ball and goes down three ramps.
    3. Then he goes over some gears
    4. Then is bounced down another platform
    5. Then is bounced by two other gears
    6. Then is grabbed by a robotic arm that extends him out toward Pikachu, so he could do Fury Swipes.
      • Naturally, it doesn't work: it doesn't reach far enough for him to strike Pikachu. Jessie ends up having an epic Face Fault, while Dedenne does one off of Bonnie's head.
  • Running Gag: Jessie confusing "budget" and "gadget".
  • Silent Snarker: As Meowth activates the trio's machine, the twerps look on amazed, except for Bonnie whose annoyed face pretty much asks why everyone is just stopping and watching them set their ridiculous plan in motion.
  • Strange Minds Think Alike: After Team Rocket's machine turns out to be little more than an extension for Meowth's Fury Swipes (a failed one at that), Jessie and even the heroes react with exasperation. James however insists that the whole point of gadgetry is to watch and appreciate it's abilities, regardless as to whether it's more productive. Being near enough the exact same speech Clemont gave to Serena earlier, he openly takes his side.
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Clemont says he sympathizes with Team Rocket for their device failure. Bonnie is not happy about that. Serena is more exasperated.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: Jessie and even the twerps are exasperated when Team Rocket's Rube Goldberg Device fails on the final stage.
