Tropes for the episode:

  • Benevolent Boss: Glynn stands by McManus, refusing Devlin's suggestion to fire him to increase his chances for lieutenant governor until he publicly embarrasses him with his tone deaf behaviour at Officer Howard's funeral. After that, he finally had enough and decides to get rid of McManus.

  • DirtyPrisonGuard: Lopresti breaks a lot of rules by having an affair with Shirley.

  • Domestic Abuse: Harrison tells Beecher that Hank pimped out his girlfriend.

  • Enemy Mine: Ryan convinces Stanislofsky to put their differences aside as it would be more profitable and safe for both of them in the long run.

  • Even Evil Has Standards: Both Moses and Nat express disgust at Miles for killing his two families.

  • Genre Savvy: Adebisi is suspicious of Basil's efforts to join his operation, and orders Poet to investigate his claims.

  • Heteronormative Crusader: Said again shows signs of this when discouraging Beecher from his relationship with Keller.

  • Honor Before Reason: One of the jurors at Cramer's trial feels compelled to tell him that his conviction was influenced by a homophobic juror despite absolutely believing Cramer's guilt, and knowing this gives him a better chance to get away with his crime.

  • It's All My Fault: Dr. Nathan admits to blaming herself for her husband's death.

  • Jerkass Has a Point: Though a little impolite, Beecher is right when he says Said needs "something to rage against"

  • Kick the Dog:
    • Stanislofsky arranging for Hoyt and the other bikers to kill Galino just so he can keep a cell phone that was rightfully Galino's.

    • Vern's taunting of Beecher about Keller's injuries.

  • Love Makes You Crazy:
    • McManus's erratic behavior is caused by his pain over losing Diane.

    • O'Reily hurts himself so he can interact with Gloria. It's not particularly successful.

  • Morality Pet: Mukada remarks on how surprising it is to see how much Vern truly loves Hank.

  • Politically Incorrect Hero: Said is rather dismissive of Cramer when they talk due to the latter's homosexuality.

  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Cyril kicks off the conflict between his brother and Stanislofsky by telling him about the cell phone.

  • Villainous Friendship: Poet is saddened by the deaths of Kenny and Pierce.
