Recap / Orange Is The New Black S 06 E 02 Shitstorm Coming

Go To

Investigators are looking into the riot and the death of Piscatella. Gloria is quick to place the blame on Maria as revenge for claiming that she was the one who rescued the guards during the riot, and she coaxes Blanca to do the same. Cindy gets a lawyer but accidentally implies that Taystee was the one who killed Piscatella. Piper is still asking what happened to Alex but quickly realises how bad Max really is when it's revealed her seemingly friendly roommate killed her own children.

Meanwhile Caputo is on paid leave and is struggling with what to do about his future while it turns out that Pennsatucky managed to escape Litchfield during the riot and is travelling with Coates, but their plan hits a snag when a worried Dixon insists on accompanying Coates as he thinks he's suicidal.

Flashbacks show how Cindy got pregnant at a young age and how she struggled to cope with the responsibility of being a teenage mother.

This episode provides examples of the following tropes:

  • All Love Is Unrequited: Cindy's flashbacks hint that she really loved Curtis, the father of her child, to the point of refusing to tell her abusive father his name for fear of what he would do to him. It doesn't appear that Curtis feels the same way.
  • Broken Record: Piper continues on her 'Where's Alex?' streak and is only shaken momentarily when she learns what her bunkmate Beth is in prison for.
  • Character Focus: Cindy uses her Jewish connections to get a great lawyer and we also get a series of flashbacks about how she ended up pregnant with her daughter as a teenager and how she never took to being a mother.
  • Disappeared Dad: We don't find out what happened to Curtis or whether Cindy told him that Monica was his or not.
  • Even Evil Has Standards: Beth implies that she's been frequently attacked and injured during her stay in prison but it's not until later that it's revealed it's because she killed her own children; prisoners infamously look down on child killers and many of the other inmates are mothers themselves.
  • Exactly What It Says on the Tin: Beth the Baby Killer killed her own children.
  • Mistaken for Suicidal: Dixon is worried that Coates is suicidal after finding what he presumes is his bucket list; turns out it's just a list of what Pennsatucky wanted to do after she escaped from prison.
  • The Mistress: A teenage version but Cindy is this for Curtis, who already has a girlfriend called Jasmine.
  • Punk in the Trunk: Pennsatucky ends up escaping Litchfield during the riot and hiding in the trunk of Coates' car. Coates knows she's in there but unfortunately she ends up having to stay in there for much longer than anticipated when Dixon invites himself along to accompany Coates.
  • Raised by Grandparents: During the last flashback we see Cindy ignoring her crying daughter and leaving the house, while Cindy's mother is the one to pick up Monica and comfort her; foreshadowing that she would eventually end up raising her.
  • Shout-Out: Pennsatucky is playing Temple Run in the trunk of Coates' car until the battery dies.
  • Teen Pregnancy: Cindy was just sixteen years old when she became pregnant with her daughter, Monica.
  • Truth in Television: Beth implies that she's been hurt a lot during her stay and we later find out that her crime was killing her own children. This happens in real life too, people who hurt or kill children are seen as the lowest of the low in prisons and are often treated poorly by the other inmates.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Beth is in prison for killing her three children, earning her the nickname Beth the Baby Killer.
