Recap / One Tree Hill S6E13 "Things a Mama Don’t Know"

Go To

Peyton receives some startling news that she must share with Lucas. Lucas is still in L.A., and discovers that Julian has been keeping another secret regarding the movie. Nathan struggles in a new professional environment, and Brooke's search for Sam, who has run away, forces her to confront her feelings about the night she was attacked.

Contains examples of the following tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: After the previous episode built up the possibility that Peyton could be diagnosed with cancer, this episode opens on Peyton and Lucas’ phone call from the previous episode.
Peyton: I'm not sure that I can call you my fiancé anymore… 'Cause I was thinking maybe I'd start calling you my baby daddy.
    Lucas: Are we…
Peyton: I'm having your baby, Lucas Scott. Our baby. We're pregnant.
  • Clothes Make the Legend: When Nathan arrives in the Chiefs locker room for the first time, another player mockingly tells Nathan that his traditional number (#23) is taken; Nathan subsequently asks if he can wear #12, motivated by it being the Jamie wants to wear.
  • Internal Reveal: As police do a once over of the Daniels’ house, they find Q’s wallet, implicating Xavier in his murder.
  • Missing Child: Andre and Jamie leave the backyard and head to Q’s grave when Andre’s mother is supposed to be watching them.
  • Out-of-Character Alert: Haley picks up on Peyton’s response to Sam going missing as being more inline with a new or expectant parent, and quickly realises that Peyton’s pregnant.
  • Pet the Dog: Lucas ends up vouching for Julian staying on the movie when the head of studio (And Julian’s father) asks Lucas if he believes Julian wants to make a good movie or if he’s just trying to get Peyton back, despite their relationship being somewhat adversarial since Lucas found out about Julian’s history with Peyton.
  • Something Only They Would Say: Xavier telling Brooke to "Have a nice night" when she calls round looking for Sam triggers Brooke’s memory of her attack and she realises that he was the culprit.
  • Titled After the Song: The episode title is taken from the song "Things a Mama Don't Know" by Mica Roberts.
  • Verbal Backspace: Peyton attempts one when she realises that she might have just told Haley about her pregnancy; ironically, doing so is what leads to Haley putting everything together.
Haley: Yeah, me, too. It was terrifying not knowing where Jamie was. Sometimes, I just want to lock him up and home school him.
Peyton: That's my plan. [Beat] I mean, in, like, the future when I need a plan.
Haley: Oh, my god! You're pregnant!
  • What the Hell, Hero?: Lucas politely calls Julian’s father out over how little faith he has in his own son.
  • "Well Done, Son" Guy: Julian and his father’s dynamic fits, due to to the dismissive way Paul speaks about his son.
  • Wham Episode: Lucas and Peyton are having a baby; Brooke confronts her attacker and brings him to justice, complete with evidence linking him to the murder of Quentin Fields.
