Go To

  • The Cameo: La Muerte, Xibalba and The Candlemaker from the The Book of Life can be seen in the flashback of Micte and Mictlan wedding.
  • Daddy Had a Good Reason for Abandoning You: As Micte pointed out, she ultimately couldn't go through with sacrificing Maya when she was born and had to send her away to Teca so that Mictlan didn't kill her on the spot as an infant.
  • Dark and Troubled Past: Implied with what little Micte reveals. She simply said that she married Mictlan because she used to be as power-hungry as him, and desperately took measures to protect herself when he became drunk with power.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Micte recounting how she married Mictlan for power, only to become afraid of him as he grew more dangerous sounds eerily similar to how many victims get trapped in abusive relationships.
  • Defrosting Ice Queen: Maya is initially still very cold and distrusting of Lady Micte. However, after Micte opens up to Maya a bit about her past, expresses remorse for her more insidious acts, such as the initial motivation for Maya's conception and reveals that she visited her every year on her birthday, Maya melts and accepts Micte as her mother.
  • First Kiss: Maya and Zatz share their first kiss together in a moonlit cave, cementing their mutual feelings for each other.
  • Heroic BSoD: Maya has one after she and the gang barely make it out from the underworld with their lives and lose Picchu, and is very remorseful over being consumed with revenge.
  • Heroic Sacrifice: In order to let her husband and son escape, Zyanya stayed behind to fight off the Bog Warriors pursuing them, at the cost of her life.
  • Mama Bear: Zyanya to Zatz before her death.
  • "Oh, Crap!" Smile: King Teca when he realizes that Micte, his former mistress and daughter's birth mother, is standing right before him and his wife.
  • I Need to Go Iron My Dog: After King Teca's discomfort around Queen Teca and Lady Micte reaches its' peak, he awkwardly excuses himself by claiming that he and Maya need to take Chiapa out to pee.
  • Post-Kiss Catatonia: Zatz momentarily sports a disoriented, goofy smile after Maya kisses him before the climactic battle.
  • Sacrificial Lamb: Micte confesses that she initially conceived Maya solely so she can sacrifice her and gain the necessary power to protect herself from Mictlan.
  • The Reveal: The chambermaid who comforted Maya after her argument with Queen Teca in Chapter One turned out to have actually been a disguised Micte. As it turns out, she's done that throughout Maya's life every year on her birthday.
  • Together in Death: After his father's death, Zatz takes comfort in both of his parents now being reunited as stars in the afterlife.
  • True Companions: Despite Maya urging them to go back to their kingdoms and warn them of Mictlan's impending attack, Rico, Chimi and Zatz instead rally them against the god and convince them to go to Teca and aide them in the final battle.
