Recap / Learning How to Be a Princess Chapter 5 "Witches Duel"

Go To

After the events that led up to Eda's capture are made clear, Belos allows Eda to duel her sister to gain her freedom.

Tropes That Appear In This Chapter:

  • Anything You Can Do, I Can Do Better: When Eda finds out that the reason why she ran into Luz is because Lilith is a lousy teacher, she offers to be Luz's new teacher, both because of her magical potential and to spite her sister.
Eda: "HA! Lily, your teaching was so boring, it caused a national emergency!"
  • Arson, Murder, and Jaywalking: The charges listed against Eda include "refusing to join a coven, practicing wild magic, avoiding arrest, theft, and being in possession of several ounces of Giggle Leaf."
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: When Kikimora lists the charges against Eda, the last one was "being in possession of several ounces of Giggle Leaf", something she claims wasn't hers.
  • Magic Mirror: When Belos sees Luz's smashed mirror, he recognizes it as a cursed mirror that reveals people's insecurities to them and questions why it was in her room in the first place.
  • Puppet King: Belos has a brief moment of agony as the Titan tells him to continue working on the portal, implying that his service to the Titan's will isn't as voluntary as it seems.
  • Rage Against the Reflection: When Luz argues with her reflection, she smashes the mirror.
  • Throwing the Fight: While only Belos, Eda and Lilith know about it, Lilith actually threw the Wizard Duel as repayment for Eda forfeiting the duel that let Lilith become a member of the Emperor's Coven when they were teenagers.
  • Trial by Combat: When Luz vouches for Eda's character, Belos gives her the chance of a pardon if she can best Lilith in a Wizard Duel, with Eda being forced to join his coven if she loses (though she'll also be cured of her curse as consolation). Eda agrees on the condition that if she wins, she still gets her curse broken and gets to be Luz's mentor instead of Lilith.
  • Worf Had the Flu: Downplayed. While Eda might have won the duel despite not being at full power due to the curse, but it's left up in the air due to Lilith throwing the match regardless.
