Tropes

  • Armor-Piercing Question: "If I actually mattered to anybody, wouldn't they have found me by now?"
  • Asshole Victim: Munch is glad that Graham is dead after Amaro kills him.
Munch: "I'm a big fan of guys like Graham facing due process, but I'll sleep pretty good tonight."
  • Ax-Crazy: Graham Winger. He gleefully terrorizes and rapes young prostitutes and hunts them down like animals as a way of getting back at women in general for not noticing him.
  • Bungled Suicide: Lizzie tried to hang herself to get away from Graham's games, but the branch snapped.
  • Cold Turkeys Are Everywhere: It's Super Bowl weekend and Rollins had to go to three meetings to keep from being tempted.
  • Disposing of a Body: Up to eleven bodies are found in Dead Horse Bay, the freshest one being 30 days old. By the end, it's shown he's had 15 kills, meaning there are four more bodies yet to be found.
  • Donut Mess with a Cop: Haden meets Benson in a donut shop
Benson: A donut shop? You certainly know how to woo a cop.
    Haden: I like donuts.
  • Driven to Suicide: Graham's M.O. is to drive his prey to the breaking point. Lizzie tried to do this twice — once by hanging herself, but the branch broke, and then again by touching the electric fence during a storm, but the storm — Hurricane Irene — had been ferocious enough to knock the power out (once she realized the fence wasn't electrified, she climbed the fence and escaped).
  • Foreshadowing: When Amaro video calls his wife, things seem a little tense between them, and he can't bring himself to tell her the truth about how the case ended. It's an early sign that their marriage may be on shaky ground and particularly that they're having difficulty communicating with each other.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: The crawlspace in Graham's cabin is what allows Amaro to shoot him dead.
  • Hunting the Most Dangerous Game: Graham calls up escorts for dates and then takes them up to the mountains, making them run for their life while shooting at them with ketamine darts. He rapes the girls he catches, then makes them do it again until they succumb to despair and kill themselves, at which point he begins hunting for a new victim.
  • Meaningful Name: Graham's dog is named Orion, after a hunter in Greek Mythology who, in several myths, was either a rapist or attempted it.
  • Serial Killer: Graham Winger is a sadistic sex-killer who abducts young women, drugs them, rapes them, and hunts them like wild animals, with the only escape being to hang themselves.
  • Straw Misogynist: Graham's murders are fueled by his violent misogyny. When he has Ophelia at gunpoint, he rants and raves about how women are "whores" who don't appreciate him unless he pays them. Bizarrely, he even seems to hate actual prostitutes for wanting to be paid for their services.
  • Wham Shot: The dogs detecting FOUR bodies in Dead Horse Bay.
