Recap / King Of The Hill S 5 E 2 The Buck Stops Here

Go To

Bobby lands himself a summer job as Buck's personal assistant, but Buck's crude behavior begins rubbing off on Bobby. Meanwhile, Peggy and Mihn become obsessed with donating blood for the chance at getting a coffee mug.

Tropes:

  • Harmful to Minors: Not surprisingly, Buck is not a man who should be hanging around a child. His crass habits show up in Bobby, and he takes the boy across state lines without Hank's knowledge to a back-alley craps game.
  • Kick the Dog: Buck plays a rather cruel joke on an attendant at the spa he takes Bobby to, throwing a substantial tip in the hot tub and laughing as the guy fishes for it. Bobby's shocked reaction indicates this is the moment he starts realizing he might have misjudged Buck.
  • Papa Wolf: Hank shows up on the nick of time with a golf club to scare off the thug trying to take Buck's watch from Bobby. And also makes sure he drives slow enough during the getaway so Buck gets a well deserved sock in the face.
  • Pyrrhic Victory: The B-plot of the episode has Peggy and Minh competing so see who can donate the most blood and get a commemorative coffee mug after Minh brags about how she would make the quota first and rub it in Peggy's face. While Hank made his way to Arkansas to get Bobby, Peggy dragged herself to the backyard fence where she showed Minh that she won the mug for donating the most blood. When Minh demands an explanation since the both of them were banned from donating blood in Arlen, as the amount in their bodies had reached a critically low level, Peggy says that she heard that a crane collapse in Houston led to a large number of casualties and she made her way over there. As Minh walks away and angrily mutters in Laotian, Peggy, barely conscious on the ground, says the drinks served in the mug will be "tasty".
  • Rule of Symbolism: Strickland's watch. After Hank realizes that Bobby's picking up Strickland's bad habits, he tells Bobby he won't be Strickland's caddy anymore and to give back the expensive watch Strickland gave him, but Bobby responds that he's keeping the watch and won't quit because Strickland pays him well. However, after Strickland loses in Rooster's gambling den, one of the goons demands Bobby hand over the last of Strickland's cash and the watch as well, but when Bobby runs off with it, the goon corners Bobby and makes it clear he'll get the watch in any way possible. When Hank manages to scare off the goon with a golf club, Bobby calls him back, and tosses him the watch saying "I don't want it anymore."
  • Take That!: Hank, a proud Republican voter, locks his truck doors when he passes by a sign that boasts that Arkansas is home to (then) Democratic President Bill Clinton.
  • Unishment: After Hank rescues both Bobby and Buck, he tells Bobby that he is grounded for the rest of the summer (aka staying in his room). Bobby clearly catches what his father means and thanks him, meaning he can play video games the entire break.
  • Would Hurt a Child: Rooster's goons are not above getting Bobby injured while trying to take Buck's watch from him.
  • You Are Grounded!: An oddly positive example; Hank grounds Bobby for the rest of the summer due to his escapades with Buck, which Bobby gladly accepts and thanks him for the action since that means he gets to sleep in and watch TV for the rest of the summer like he was originally intending to before Hank made him get a job.
