Recap / Kevin Can Fuck Himself S 02 E 03 Ghost

Go To

Patty wakes up in the middle of the night, hearing someone stirring outside her room. She reaches for the baseball bat underneath her bed and comes out swinging, hitting Neil while he's stealing out of her purse. Neil claims he hasn't slept since arriving home from the hospital so he needs money for weed to help him sleep. Patty refuses, asserting he’s not blameless in the situation. Patty tries to offer Neil something else as compensation but he storms out.

Meanwhile, Kevin gets ready for his Halloween tradition wherein he and Neil watch scary movies together. Allison tells Kevin she plans to go to the movies with Patty, much to Kevin’s disappointment. At the same time, Patty informs Tammy she’s accompanying Allison to pick up a new coffee table that evening. Tammy is still not a fan of Allison but promises she's working on it. Tammy is attending a board game night with some friends and wants Patty, her girlfriend, to go with her. Patty vows to stop by after assisting Allison.

Allison and Patty walk to a mortuary where they meet with Billy. He informs Allison and Patty that this particular mortuary takes in bodies nobody claimed, people with few friends or family to know of their passing. Here, they can find an identity to steal for Allison's new life. While the two make their way to the basement, Allison thinks back to her father's wake in 2005, which she had personally put together, only for her efforts to be berated by her mother, Donna, who was similarly as domineering and abusive towards her as Kevin is.

Neil gets a call from Kevin, who demands that he come over for the "Pal-o-ween" festivities. Meanwhile, Tammy is at game night with her sister and some other friends, waiting impatiently for a text from Patty. Her friends confiscated her phone so that she wouldn’t obsess over it. Once her sister returns it, Tammy notices she has zero texts from Patty but 13 missed calls from Neil. At the mortuary, Patty finds a possible identity for Allison to use - Gertrude Fronch, a single woman from outside Massachusetts ten years Allison's senior who perished in an accident with no online presence, close family members, or friends. Allison isn’t a fan of the name. While helping Allison look for an alternative identity to take on, Patty thinks back to the first night she (and by extension, Kevin) first met Allison when she went to the bar for some drinks after her father's wake and how Kevin made her laugh. Allison tells Patty to go meet with Tammy while she goes to the cemetery. However, she hears a sound that startles her, and falls backward into a fresh grave. Patty helps Allison up, and the pair walk home. Allison is touched that Patty returned for her, even though the latter needs to make things right with Tammy for missing the game night.

Kevin, Neil, and Pete are watching a horror movie while accompanied by Tammy. Allison and Patty are outside the door when Kevin, spooked by a noise, kicks the door with all his might, smacking it into Allison’s face. Later, Allison sits on the couch with a bag of frozen veggies on her swollen cheek. Kevin blames her for scaring him.

While Allison stands in the bathroom with the frozen bag on her face, Patty pops into view, asking to see the damage Kevin wrought. Allison settles on taking Gertrude Fronch's identity, deciding to trust Patty's solid sense of direction.

Tropes

  • Abusive Parents: Allison's mother Donna was basically just as domineering and abusive towards Allison as Kevin is, even having her own "sitcom filter".
  • Batter Up!: Patty keeps a baseball bat under her bed to whack any intruders in the face.
  • The Cameo: Donna is played by Peri Gilpin.
  • Evil Matriarch: Allison's mother, who even has her own Kevin-style "sitcom filter". It's not hard to see why Allison moved in with and married Kevin so soon after meeting him if she was truly desperate to get away from that.
  • Flashback B-Plot: The episode jumps between the present day and flashbacks in 2005, when Allison first met Kevin and Patty.
  • Friend Versus Lover: Patty finds herself caught between Allison (the friend) and Tammy (the lover). It's not helped by how neither of them particularly likes or trusts the other.
  • Genre Refugee: Invoked in a way for Tammy with how much she sticks out like a sore thumb during the scene where she's watching horror movies with Kevin, Neil, and Pete. While she has appeared in other episodes with the "sitcom filter" in place, it's made especially clear here through her obvious discomfort and exasperation of dealing with the trio just how much her character type clashes with the traditional sitcom setting.
  • Halloween Episode: Kevin's subplot has him watching horror movies and getting scared easily.
  • The Pete Best: Invoked. The flashbacks reveal Kevin and Neil had another friend named Doug ten years prior. It's unknown when and how he stopped hanging out with them, but knowing Kevin, we can assume that he got out while the getting was good.
  • Unfortunate Names: Allison really doesn't like the name "Gertrude Fronch".
