Recap / Kevin Can Fuck Himself S 02 E 02 The Way We Were

Go To

Allison and Patty threaten Neil to stay silent about the murder plot, counting on no one believing him. Patty is still skeptical that Allison's plan to fake her death will actually work.

Later, Allison and Diane meet with Billy Terrell, a private investigator. Diane's unsure if she wants to leave Chuck. Billy picks up on Allison's not-so-subtle sniffing and tells her to pay a retainer upfront if she wants to enlist his services. Since she doesn't have the money for it, Allison tries to get her old job back at Diane's liquor store, but the latter reveals she's already hired someone new. Diane suggests Allison pawn off some valuable items of Kevin's that he's keeping in her storage unit as she plans to do with some of Chuck's belongings.

Meanwhile, Tammy arrives at Patty's, needing a place to stay due to the power cutting out at her place. Patty invites her inside and later tries to clean her living room, including disposing of the books where she keeps her illegally obtained cash from her oxycodone dealing. Tammy spots Neil outside, sporting a new hairdo and stitches on his head; the hospital discharged him early. Neil explains he received the stitches from passing out via food poisoning and smacking his head. Allison arrives on the scene and an awkward conversation ensues before they head their separate ways.

Neil heads inside the McRoberts' home and grabs a beer from the fridge, thinking back to his altercation with Allison and Patty cracking a bottle over his head. Kevin then bursts into the kitchen. He explains that now that he's a local celebrity, he's in need of an assistant. He offers the job to Neil, which Neil accepts eagerly. He sends Neil over to Chuck's storage unit to get his vintage Red Sox hat. At the same time, Allison and Diane rummage through Chuck's storage unit for something Allison can hock at a pawnshop. She finds her grandmother's pearl necklace and a Wade Boggs rookie card belonging to Kevin. When Neil appears, Diane distracts him while Allison flees.

Tammy vents about the case to Patty over dinner, revealing that while investigating Nick, she found an unusual pill bottle not originating from the town's pharmacy. Patty runs outside for a smoke. Later, Patty finds Neil destroying his bedroom while searching for Kevin's hat (which Allison stole). Neil is in the throes of a meltdown. Patty tries to comfort her brother and Neil orders her to leave.

Allison finds Kevin in the kitchen prepping for an interview with a local Worcester newspaper. He asks Allison to tell the interviewer she's his cousin because it looks better for his "Wild Dude" brand if he's single. Later, Allison returns to the diner to chat with Sam after their argument. Sam believes she's asking about her job, and Allison discovers at that moment that she was fired. Sam tells her that they can't work together.

Allison goes to the pawnshop with Diane, where she finds that the Wade Boggs rookie card was stolen, so she can't get any money off it. Meanwhile, Kevin is getting interviewed by Kelly, the Worcester Gazette reporter, which quickly devolves into painful shenanigans for him and Neil. Neil tries to inform Kevin about the murder plot, but Kevin doesn’t take it seriously. Kelly then sees Allison outside, surprised to learn that Allison is married to Kevin. Kelly reminds Allison that she could have left Worcester if she’d tried.

Patty enters her house to find Tammy departing, and she tries to persuade her to stay. However, Patty’s inability to open up and be honest with Tammy culminates in the latter leaving. Tammy attends a funeral service for her old police partner Officer Bram. Patty confesses she has baggage she’s working on and still wants to be with Tammy. Tammy accepts Patty’s apology.

Kevin, Neil, and Pete have celebratory beers together. Kevin believes the interview was a smashing success. Allison arrives home before going to “hang out” with Patty. Patty insists on this being the last time she assists Allison with her schemes. They arrive at an empty parking lot to meet with Billy. Billy reveals he’s sleeping with one eye open ever since Chuck smashed the windows of his car after Diane left a note saying she’s bound for South Carolina. Allison says she needs his help in faking her death.

Tropes

  • Amusing Injuries: Kevin accidentally gets hot sauce around his eyes, causing him to scream and fall over in pain. He also ends up making Neil trip over him.
  • Cassandra Truth: Neil outright tells Kevin Allison tried to murder him, but Kevin laughs it off, simply stating that marriage is already a death sentence in itself.
  • Cigarette of Anxiety: Patty relapses back to smoking after attempting to quit. Allison also takes a drag off it for herself, only to cough really hard from it.
  • Get Out!: Neil viciously tells Patty to get out of his room when she tries to comfort him, as he's not exactly in a forgiving mood over how she whacked him over the head with a beer bottle.
  • It's All About Me: This episode shows how self-absorbed Kevin is with regards to not just Allison, but Neil as well. Neil had been recuperating in the hospital for the last couple of days from a bloody head wound and rather than express any concern for his friend's well-being, Kevin just makes everything all about his newfound fame as the Worcester Wild Dude.
  • Likes Older Women: Neil momentarily checks out Diane while she's bending over to pick up something, remarking "who knew?" to himself.
  • Motor Mouth: When Neil reunites with Kevin after a few days of separation, Kevin talks over Neil the whole time.
  • Sanity Slippage: Neil increasingly finds himself becoming more frantic and desperate in not just trying to get back into Kevin's good graces, but also seeing for himself that Kevin is just not a good friend to him.
  • Shout-Out: Allison is compared to Wilma Flintstone when wearing her grandma's pearl necklace (ironically, Kevin basically looks like a live action Fred Flintstone himself).
