Go To

Air date: December 17, 2004

Opera Yumi contains examples of:

  • Classical Music Is Boring: Yumi's performance in the opera is depicted as putting several audience members (including Kaz) to sleep. When Ami and Yumi turn it the show into a J-pop performance, the audience gets much more excited.
  • Heel–Face Turn: Implied with Madame Blubbery towards the end. When Ami and Yumi sing a rock song on the opera stage, you can see her smiling with approval, as though internally realizing rock music isn't as bad as she thought.
  • Hoist by His Own Petard: Madame Blubbery's control over Yumi comes to an end when she forces her to sing the highest note, which breaks her flute and in turn breaks her control over Yumi.
  • Magical Flutist: Not magical, per say, but Madame Blubbery has trained all her students to obey her commands every time she blows her whistle.
  • Never My Fault: Madame Blubbery accuses Yumi of being a quitter, not owning up that Yumi dislikes opera because her teacher shoves it down her throat and literally brainwashes her to think rock music is "bad".
  • Not So Above It All: Yumi claims that Madame Blubbery's whistle doesn't work on her like it used to. But the instant she blows it, Yumi is instantly under her spell.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Ami knows something is wrong with Yumi when she won't even touch her guitar.
  • "The Reason You Suck" Speech: "I never quit opera, I quit you!"

Pen Pal contains examples of:

  • Failed a Spot Check: Ami fails to realize the pen pal she's been sending letters to and receiving letters from is from Paris, Idaho instead of Paris, France.
  • Unseen Pen Pal: Ami is exited because she's going to meet Pierre, her pen pal from Paris. But instead of the suave hunk Ami expected, Pierre turns out to be a nerdy kid from Paris, Idaho.
