Recap / Hell Girl S 2 E 24 Chain Reaction

Go To

People are disappearing left and right in the town of Lovely Hills. After Mr. Mariyama goes home from Takuma's house, he is sent to hell by his daughter who hates him for scolding her. Another woman named Akiko sends her husband to hell because she regrets marrying him. Then Akiko's friend sends her to hell, because she's always hated Akiko. And so forth. All the disappearances are blamed on Takuma. While the disappearances are happening, Detective Meshiai goes to the library and finds the book written by Shibata Hajime about Hell Girl. After learning about Hell Girl from the book, he goes to Takuma's house and sees that Takuma doesn't have the Hell brand on his chest, and confirms that Takuma is innocent. Mr. Tsuyuki, one of the neighbors who has been keeping a vigil outside Takuma's house, attacks Detective Meshiai for discovering the truth. Before collapsing, Detective Meshiai sees the Hell brand on Mr. Tsuyuki's chest. In the meantime, Hotaru is at Ai Enma's house. After Enma Ai tells Hotaru that it's not up to her to decide who to send to hell, Ai brings Hotaru back to the mortal world.

This episode contains examples of:

  • The Bus Came Back: Tsugumi very briefly appears to explain to Detective Meshiai why Hajime published the book "The True Hell Girl".
  • Disproportionate Retribution: After word about the Hell Correspondence gets out, the people in Lovely Hills begin to send each other to Hell for petty reasons, such as a woman being upset that her husband overworks himself and rests on his days off, and a man's daughter sending him to Hell for telling her to get a job or go to college.
  • Dragged Off to Hell: Numerous minor characters, as word about the Hell Correspondence begins to spread throughout Lovely Hills and people begin to use it for petty reasons.
  • Ironic Name: The town is called "Lovely Hills" but this episode proves it's anything but lovely.
  • Laser-Guided Karma: A woman who used the Hell Correspondence to send her neglectful husband to Hell is sent to Hell the next day by her friend who claims to have always hated her.
  • Nothing Is Scarier: Whatever Ai's grandmother looks like behind the screen, the viewer never sees, but it causes Hotaru to run away in terror.
  • The Scapegoat: Takuma, and even more so than in his debut episode. Numerous people in Lovely Hills begin to use the Hell Correspondence and blame him for the various disappearances so they don't have to take responsibility for their crimes.
  • Taking You with Me: Believing she'll go to Hell after making eye contact with Takuma, one of Ai's clients decides to take one of her friends with her.
  • Trapped in Another World: Kikuri traps Hotaru in Ai's dimension for several days, though to Hotaru, it apparently feels like a few hours to a day.
  • Unnaturally Looping Location: As Hotaru learns, no matter how far away she walks, she'll always end up back at the entrance of Ai's house.
  • World of Jerkass: Lovely Hills, at least, is populated by paranoid and petty individuals that are complicit in the abuse, scapegoating, and ostracization of a young boy no older than 12 years old.
