Recap / Hamster & Gretel S1E34 "When Life Gives You Lemons"

Go To

Gretel and Bailey decide to open up their own lemonade stand, in order to gain enough funds to provide their own dream treehouse. Nordle appears with Tobor, and offers the two a proposition to significantly improve their business in exchange for a third of it. Initially declining, Gretel eventually accepts the offer after realizing their current methods are inefficient.

Tropes:

  • Applied Phlebotinum: To tackle the supply issue, Nordle uses a radioactive compound recently patented by his dad as "Fruitonium" to turn the one lemon Gretel and Bailey have left into an enormous one.
  • Bad Guys Play Pool: Inverted: Kevin and Hamster are playing pool instead.
  • Chekhov's Skill: Kevin and Hamster’s pool skills are used to stop the lemon by using a telephone pole as a giant cue and a globe statue as the cue ball.
  • Cue the Billiard Shot: As Gretel mentions Kevin is over at Fred's playing pool, the scene cuts to the side of a billiards table in Fred's basement, as the camera pans up right when Kevin makes his billiards shot.
  • Giant Food: Nordle uses his father’s “Fruitonium” to make a giant lemon for making lemonade. Unfortunately, the lemon breaks loose and rolls uncontrollably through town, demolishing everything in its path.
  • Good Capitalism, Evil Capitalism: This episode portrays Gretel and Bailey's method to sell lemonade as earnest but impractical, and Nordle's method as efficient but soulless. Do mind though, that Nordle does want to help the girls out and isn't trying to pull one over them with hidden clauses: he just believes that his method is better, and while it does work on the short term, it's generally seen as a problematic solution.
  • Grandma's Recipe: Bailey's lemonade is based on that of the love and passion her grandmother puts in her lemonade. Invoked with Nordle's Mascot when rebranded as "Grandma Exclamation's Old Timey Lemonade".
  • How We Got Here: The episode opens on Gretel already trying to stop a ginormous lemon rolling through the city streets. When she gets run over by it and crushed into the concrete, a voiceover of her states she always wanted a lemonade stand as far as she could remember, as the episode cuts to a couple hours prior.
  • Mascot: After gaining a third of the business, Nordle rebranded it as "Grandma Exclamation's Old Timey Lemonade", with the titular Grandma Exclamation as its mascot. It's not Nordle's actual grandmother, but a suggestion from Nordle's ad agency to attract the 45-80 demographic.
  • When Life Gives You Lemons...: Episode is literally named after the idiom. Nordle's version of it is also "When life gives you a lemon, make it huge!"
