Gintama: Shonen Jump is Best Enjoyed Cover to Cover

It's another boring day at Yorozuya Gin, with Gintoki reading the newest Jump magazine advertising Granblue Fantasy on the back of its cover. Wishing some of that Granblue action, Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura are dragged into that world without much warning. Noticing that they're now in a collab with Granblue, the three decided to wait for the Captain to pick them up. Unfortunately, their genre savviness went nowhere, causing them to ultimately get picked up by a NPC.

The Captain did pick up some people as a part of the collab, but it's not Yorozuya Gin, it's the Shinsengumi. It turns out there are rifts leading to parallel universes/alternate dimensions forming around the skies, leading Sierokarte to request the Grandcypher's crew, Hijikata, and Okita to take down the culprit behind all of these and stop their plans.

Tropes

  • Ass Shove: Gintoki and Kagura return to the Sky Realm to rescue Shinpachi by Sadaharu throwing them into his uh... behind. The way how Sadaharu presents this avenue at first doesn't help.
  • Bad Liar: Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura are all terrible at hiding their connections to the culprit while being questioned by the crew and the Shinsengumi duo. Fortunately for them, Hijikata and Okita knows the trio are not in cahoots with him since they think that doing something like opening interdimensional rifts are way out of their league.
  • Bait-and-Switch: When enlisting help to clean up the planarian clones, Sierokarte rounds up the Eternals among the few. More specifically, it's Katsura, Elizabeth, and Sakamoto.
  • Crossover: With Gintama.
  • Department of Redundancy Department: Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon.
  • Double Entendre: It wouldn't be Gintama without a few lines like destroying the balls the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon and Shinpachi wincing to every line related to balls.
  • Enemy Mine: While he's normally an enemy to Gintoki, Takasugi works along with him and the rest the crew to clean up the planarians. Fittingly, he's the first to go back home while the rest have their celebratory feast.
  • Friendship Denial: Because how close Hijikata and Okita are to Gintoki, Shinpachi, and Kagura, the crew assumes they're all friends. Hijikata sets the story straight on them.
  • Kill It with Water: Prince Hata's space planarian clones are weak to water, or anything water related as shown with Gintoki scaring them away by spitting at them.
  • Something We Forgot: Subverted. The first half of the event ends with Gintoki, Kagura, Hijikata, Okita, and Shinpachi's glasses returning home. The former two takes measures to go to the Sky Realm again once they remember Shinpachi is left behind.
  • Unwitting Instigator of Doom: The creator of the Neo Armstrong Cyclone Jet Armstrong Cannon was already willing to give up his dreams of creating it, until Yorozuya Gin rekindled his motivation to finish it, which they eventually realize what they had done.
  • Wrong Genre Savvy: Downplayed. While Gintoki is correct that he's in a crossover event with Granblue, he's wrong regarding to how he meets the Captain. It's Hijikata and Okita that fills the role Gintoki assumes he is filling for.
