Recap / Gilligans Island S 2 E 27 Allergy Time

Go To

The Skipper can't stop scratching and sneezing, and the Professor suspects it's an allergy rather than a disease. Unfortunately, it turns out to be an allergy to Gilligan. Even more unfortunately, the allergy starts to spread through the community. Will life on the island ever be the same again?

This episode includes examples of the following tropes:

  • Afraid of Needles: Despite his desire to be back with the others, Gilligan balks when he sees the Professor's improvised syringe and thinks he'll have to be stuck with the vaccine. The others react similarly when the Professor tells them that it's actually them who will have to take the shots.
  • Double Take: As the Skipper and Mr. Howell are sitting in the common area, the Professor announces he's developed an allergy vaccine. They grumble and then whip their heads around.
  • Faint in Shock: The Skipper is determined to get the vaccine over with so he can bring Gilligan back and he's already faced many nasty things in wartime. He still passes out while the Professor is prepping the needle.
  • Foreshadowing: When the Professor has Gilligan bathe with hypoallergenic soap, he tells the Skipper that he's probably allergic to something on Gilligan rather than to Gilligan.
  • Gale-Force Sound: The Skipper's sneezes are incredibly powerful. At one point, he sneezes a door open. After the failed attempt to bring Gilligan home, he sneezes and knocks down a palm tree.
  • Giant Medical Syringe: Gilligan starts causing the others to sneeze around him due to his hair tonic. The Professor thinks Gilligan should get an allergy shot to keep him from suffering a reaction to the allergens his body has absorbed, and Gilligan agrees to be injected. The Skipper and Professor decide to mess with Gilligan a bit by pretending they have to use a fake giant syringe first before Gilligan accidentally injects himself with the real solution by backing into the needle they were going to use.
  • Hope Spot: After the Professor has Gilligan bathe with hypoallergenic soap, the Skipper comes in and tests to see if Gilligan is still setting off his allergy. For a few minutes, nothing happens. Then, just as everybody is relieved that the problem has been solved, the Skipper starts sneezing again.
  • I'll Kill You!: After the others have all gotten shots, Gilligan announces his discovery that actually his papaya nut hair tonic has been causing all the trouble. The Skipper says they'll kill him.
  • Not So Above It All: Despite the Professor's more mature demeanor, he and the Skipper play a prank on Gilligan at the end of the episode. The Professor looks as amused as the Skipper.
  • Plot Allergy: First the Skipper, then all the other castaways suddenly start sneezing when they're around Gilligan. But in the end, it turns out they're not allergic to him, but to the papaya nut oil he's been using as hair tonic.
  • Smart People Know Latin: When it looks as though Gilligan will have to stay with the Professor, the Skipper says that Gilligan could learn a lot from his intelligent new roommate, such as counting to ten in Latin.
  • Talking in Your Sleep: According to Mr. Howell, Mrs. Howell doesn't snore, but she sleep-talks.
  • Vitriolic Best Buds: The Skipper's protests when the Professor suggests his allergy could be psychological sum up his half-affectionate, half-exasperated relationship with his first mate.
The Skipper: I like him. Gilligan is a friend of mine...It's just that I'd like to kill him every now and then.
