Recap / Frieren Beyond Journeys End Episode 8 Frieren The Slayer

Go To

Despite Frieren's warnings, Draht attacks the elven mage with his magic wire. Frieren easily counters his magic and kills him with little effort. However, Frieren realizes that since Draht murdered the guard stationed in front of her door, she cannot reveal what she's done without incriminating herself even more.

Meanwhile, Linie and Lügner acknowledge that Draht has most likely died, as Linie can't sense his mana anymore. Graf Granat, having grown wise to the demons' deception, confronts them about the dead guard in the dungeon. But Lügner easily defeats his men and takes Granat prisoner, intending to have him lower the barrier around the city.

Fern and Stark run into a disguised Frieren while on the way to petition Graf Granat to free her. Frieren tells them that she will leave the city in order to avoid getting arrested and sentenced to death for killing the guard. When Fern questions if Frieren would really abandon the city to Linie and Lügner, Frieren instead asks that Fern and Stark slay them in her stead and leaves, despite Stark's terrified protests. Walking through the street, Frieren senses Aura the Guillotine's mana from outside the city and decides to take care of Aura on her own.

The same night, Fern and Stark sneak into the keep. They manage to free the Graf and injure Lügner but decide to withdraw from the battle due to Granat being in critical condition. Lügner, while taking care of his wound, recognizes the spell Fern used on him as the creation of "Frieren the Slayer", so named for killing more demons than anyone else in history.

Far outside the city, Frieren and Aura finally meet face-to-face.

Contains examples of:

  • Atop a Mountain of Corpses: In Lügner's memory of her, Frieren is floating above a huge pile of disintegrating demon corpses. Said pile is even surrounded by over a dozen more dead demons, demonstrating that Frieren's moniker of "Frieren the Slayer" is well-earned.
  • Can't Kill You, Still Need You: Lügner can't kill Graf Granat right away since he still needs him to lower the city's defenses so Aura can invade.
  • Curb-Stomp Battle:
    • Frieren takes care of Draht in less than a minute and with little effort, by first blocking his wire then cutting his arms off.
    • Graf Granat and his guards stand no chance against Lügner. The guards are killed immediately and the only reason Granat doesn't follow suit is that Lügner still needs him to lower the barrier.
  • Distressed Drink Jitters: Stark spills his drink while anxiously thinking about how easily the demons could kill him.
Stark:My hands still haven't stopped shaking. See? I even spilled my drink so it looks like I wet myself.
  • Green-Eyed Monster: Lügner tells Granat that he hates so-called "geniuses" whose magic is so powerful that their works can stand for centuries, as he thinks such mages are circumventing the hard work that goes into studying magic.
  • Logical Weakness: Draht needs his hands to control his magic wire. When Frieren cuts both of his arms off, he's left completely defenseless and unable to use the wire anymore.
  • Lost in Translation: The Japanese title for this episode matches the show's title: 葬送のフリーレン (Sōsō no Furīren). The literal translation can be interpreted as either "Frieren at the funeral" or "Frieren of the funeral": the former aligns with Frieren's epiphany at Himmel's funeral which triggers the series' plot; the latter gives her an association with death, making it a fitting epitaph for an infamous killer of demons.
  • Nice Job Breaking It, Hero: By letting the peace envoy into the city, Granat confirmed Lügner's theory that the ruling family could control the barrier and that the magic to control it could be learned.
  • Nice Job Fixing It, Villain: To say Draht's assassination attempt backfired would be an understatement.
    • By killing the guard outside Frieren's cell, Draht blows the demons' cover. As Granat points out, Frieren willingly entered custody rather than jeopardize the soldiers by resisting.
    • On the other hand, Frieren is forced to flee rather than risk taking the blame, and uses the opportunity to regroup with her companions and take the fight to the demons.
    • Draht gets himself killed.
  • Razor Wire: Draht's magic manifests in a wire sharp enough to decapitate a human with a single swing. He tries to use it to execute Frieren, but Frieren simply keeps the wire from cutting her head off by creating a pure mana-shield around her neck.
  • Smug Snake: Draht confronts Frieren all on his own, confident that he can kill her with just his magic Razor Floss. Frieren is quick to disabuse him of this notion.
  • Title Drop: The episode's title is Frieren's old epithet from the war, which Lügner uses right as the episode ends.
