Recap / Frasier S 11 E 08 Murder Most Maris

Go To

When Maris murders her new boyfriend, Niles is harassed by the press when it comes out that he unwittingly gave her the murder weapon.

Tropes:

  • Exiled to the Couch: After getting chased out of their apartment by the press Daphne makes Niles sleep on the couch while they stay at Frasier's. At the end of the episode Niles calls her out on this.
  • Friendship Moment: Roz is the only one of the main cast present when Niles has his breakdown in Nervosa. She immediately calls Frasier to get him to hurry up and protects Niles from the staff who want to call the cops on him.
  • Heroic BSoD: Niles goes into one after the mounting stresses in his life get too much.
  • Literal Metaphor: Niles is handling the fallout of Maris' actions with great detachment but insists he's fine, up until the cafe runs out of straws right before his order, at which point he breaks down. It's literally "the last straw".
  • Malaproper: Frasier exacerbates his brother's dilemma by saying that he and Maris will be 'executed' instead of 'exonerated' like he intended. Niles later calls him out on it.
  • Naked Nutter: When Niles ends up breaking down at the cafe, he feels overheated and ends up stripping all his clothes, reading a newspaper that hides his privates from the camera.
  • Noodle Incident: After Frasier comments on how Roz defended Niles from the Nervosa staff she implies she's been through a similar experience.
Roz: Yeah, well, there's nothing worse than waking up naked with a bunch of cops standing around. I've been there...
  • "Not Wearing Pants" Dream: After Frasier gets Niles to realize that he's naked:
Niles: [cheerfully] I think I'm having that dream where I'm naked in Nervosa!
Frasier: I think a lot of people are having that dream.
  • "Reason You Suck" Speech: At the end of the episode, after Niles' breakdown, Maris calls asking for help. Niles finally gives a long overdue speech to her as he's had enough of her badgering him and Daphne. He then gives short ones to Frasier, Daphne and Martin for how unhelpful they were during the whole debacle.
  • Running Gag: Frasier getting out of an argument by bringing up the fact that he was punched in the face by Maris' ex-boyfriend mere hours before the man was killed, causing the others to stop shouting at him and all bow their heads in respect for the deceased. It's still working three days later.
  • The Tag: Niles comes back to Nervosa to return the aprons that Frasier borrowed, this time with a personal cigarette case of stirring straws.
