Recap / Frasier S 03 E 01 Shes The Boss

Go To

The new station manager, Kate Costas (Mercedes Ruehl), orders Frasier to make major changes in his show.

Tropes:

  • Antenna Adjusting: Daphne uses Eddie's collar cone to adjust the signal on the living room television.
  • Be Careful What You Wish For: Kate requests Frasier do theme shows on matters such as aberrant sexual practices. While she intended to shed some light on a topic of ill repute and how it actually affects society, her Mean Boss behavior leads to Frasier and Roz making light of debauchery as "shock jocks".
  • Cone of Shame: Eddie wears one during the episode due to a recent surgery. Daphne says it's good at picking up television signals, which is actually shown in The Tag.
  • Establishing Character Moment: Kate fires Father Mike before meeting Frasier, and then shows a better understanding of classical music than him before ordering Frasier to alter his show and then punishing him for talking back.
  • Fake a Fight: After reaching an understanding, in order to keep up Kate's appearance as a Mean Boss and avoid the KACL staff rebelling against her other orders, she and Frasier stage an argument where the latter "acquiesces" to actually-informative theme shows and playing classical theme music in order to return to his regular time slot.
  • Gilligan Cut: When Frasier says he has a contract and there's nothing Kate can do to him if he refuses to follow her "theme show" order, it cuts to him having to broadcast his show at 3 AM.
  • Mean Boss: Kate, the new manager, is a well-educated and intelligent woman. However, she plays hardball, forcing Frasier to broadcast in the middle of the night for not following her demands.
  • Naked People Are Funny: Frasier actually does strip down to his underwear while taking on a "shock jock" personality and discussing sex and nakedness with callers.
  • Open Mouth, Insert Foot: While broadcasting at 3 AM, Frasier falls asleep during a call from an insomniac, and ends up advising them to "sleep on it". Roz states he also mixed up a longshoreman and a gay man earlier, telling the former to stay in the closet and the latter to hang out at docks.
  • Rebellious Spirit: When he's insulted by Kate ordering him to cover what he thinks is sensationalist tripe and end up having to air his show in the early morning, Frasier and Roz give her exactly what they think she asked for by taking on "shock jock" personalities.
  • Taking You with Me: Frasier and Roz's motivation for their raunchy broadcast is to drag Kate's career down the way she's trying to ruin theirs.
  • Trophy Room: Kate's office slowly turns into one during her first meeting with Frasier as she unpacks a box full of her broadcasting awards (including the highly prestigious Peabody Award) which show just how much more she knows about radio than Frasier.
