Recap / Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends S4E2 "The Big Picture"

Go To

It’s picture day, but as everyone in the house gathers for the picture, Mac and Bloo discover older group photos including one where everybody except Frankie and Madame Foster is missing, and they set out to unravel the mystery. Meanwhile, Wilt agonizes over the prospect of not making the picture, and Coco develops body image issues.

The episode provides examples of:

  • Bunny Ears Picture Prank: This is Bloo’s big idea for a big prank. Trouble is, he can never get it right.
  • Comfort Food: Coco begins eating a bag of cookies by herself when she becomes despondent over her weight. When Frankie confesses her own issues, she starts eating the bag of cookies instead due to feeling she’s too skinny.
  • Drama-Preserving Handicap: The episode focuses on Mac and Bloo trying to figure out the story behind an unusual annual house photo that has no one in it. At first, they try to ask about the picture but no one is willing to tell them and the few that were willing to talk are quickly stopped. Frankie was willing to talk but stops when she thinks they're trying to repeat what happened, Wilt was willing to tell them but changed his mind upon learning that everyone was keeping it a secret and Camery would have told them until Herriman interfered. This leaves them having to solve it themselves with little in the way of clues.
  • Entertainingly Wrong: Mac comes to the conclusion that they all just missed it because a prankster named Wally deliberately chose not to inform anyone that the photo would be an hour early this time because the friend Camery, who took the picture, had his flash broken so they needed to do it earlier in the day to have enough light. This all makes sense and everything leads to that conclusion but it's not actually what happened. Bloo figures out what actually happened, having figured that a prankster like Wally wouldn't do something so simple. After taking a close look at the picture, Bloo realizes that Wally rigged the staircase into a trapdoor and dropped everyone into the basement.
  • Fat and Proud: Lightly implied by Frankie, who tells Coco she wishes she wasn’t so skinny and broke the scale so it would read a higher weight when used. When Coco leaves, Frankie quickly begins eating the cookies Coco left behind.
  • Foreshadowing: There are two clues that Mac’s conclusion above is incorrect.
    • First, in the picture of the year after that photo was taken, everybody looked worried, because they thought what happened last year would happen again. If they knew about the photo time, they wouldn’t be scared at all.
    • Second, if Mac's theory was correct, Mr. Herriman knew about the picture being moved back, so he would have been in the photo, but he wasn't.
  • Last-Second Photo Failure: Mac and Bloo try to solve the mystery of how all the friends mysteriously disappeared one year during the house's annual group photo shoot. The answer is eventually revealed to be a prankster friend named Wally turning the stairway into a trapdoor and opening it while under everyone just as the shot was taken, something that got him banished from the house (and all conversation). At the end of the episode, Bloo pulls the exact same stunt.
  • Poor Communication Kills: No one wants to talk about why everyone, aside from Frankie and Madame Foster, is missing from the annual house photo, resulting in Mac and Bloo spending the whole episode to find out for themselves.
  • Sudden Downer Ending: Mac has seemingly solved the mystery of the photo and everybody has managed to find a way to the photo taking, including Wilt and Camery. Coco and Eduardo have resolved their issues about their appearance… but Bloo, unsatisfied with Mac’s theory, figures out the truth of what happened and causes everyone to fall to the basement, ruining another house photo.
  • Temporary Bulk Change: Coco rather suddenly puts on weight when Duchess criticizes her appearance. When Coco realizes the scale is inaccurate, her distended belly disappears.
  • Weight Woe: Coco becomes distressed about her weight when Duchess criticizes her. Later, Frankie talks her through it, revealing she has her own body image issues - namely that she wishes she wasn’t so skinny and purposely broke the scale to display a higher weight.
