• Curse Cut Short: After Mr. Newton's Establishing Character Moment:
  Narrator: This black sub is a bad mother…
  Other voices: Shut yo' mouth!
• Drill Sergeant Nasty: This is how Chris imagines Mr. Newton. He's not too far off.
• Hidden Depths: Mr. Newton firmly believes that Chris is Brilliant, but Lazy (which, to be fair, he is) and wants to put that to good use.
• Jerkass to One: Chris is really the only student Mr. Newton is especially hard on, though he does get a bit snappy with Caruso in the beginning of the episode. Later, he happily gives Caruso a C+ but starts lecturing Chris about his B-. There is an explanation for this.
  • Jerkass Has a Point: He is rather aggressive/annoying about it, but Mr. Newton has a very good reason for how he treats Chris. He acknowledges that Chris is the one black kid in a predominantly-white school and that very factor puts him under a microscope compared to his peers. This is displayed with how he seems pretty cheery handing Caruso a C+, but starts freaking out over Chris' B-, a grade Chris himself happily accepts as he doesn't usually perform that well in Math.
• Stalker without a Crush: Mr. Newton is obsessed with maximizing Chris' potential to the point where he shows up to his house to give him a practice test.
• Unwitting Instigator of Doom: Downplayed. Chris recommends to Mr. Newton that he resign to Lamont Sanford Junior High, which he knows by now is a hellhole. However, he didn't count on him being shot, or arguably even being harmed at all; he just wanted him out of Corleone.
• Woman Scorned: How Chris envisions Newton's wife would react to an interracial affair.
