• An Aesop: The best gift you could possibly give someone for Christmas is something that can't be bought; love. In Chris' own words:
  Narrator!Chris: "You can't put love on layaway."
• Christmas Episode: The second one.
• Literal-Minded: This costs Julius his job as a Mall Santa. He thinks that the children are literally asking him for gifts instead of Santa Claus.
• Mall Santa: Julius takes up a part-time job as one to make some extra money for Christmas. Too bad he doesn't quite understand how to play his part..
• Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: It's an open question whether or not Kris was actually real, but probably not considering how he just disappears as soon as a nurse comes into the room, who claims that no one was in the other bed. And assumes Chris is on drugs.
• One-Steve Limit: Chris is accompanied by Kris, in his hospital room.
• Yank the Dog's Chain: A minor example. Julius gets the gifts that Chris can't pay off due to being hospitalized out of layaway on his behalf. However, he expects Chris to pay him back.
