Recap / Everybody Hates Chris S 2 E 9 Everybody Hates Superstition

Go To

  • An Aesop: You have to make your own luck. Lucky charms are basically just placebo effect, and only exist because they're coincidentally in your possession when you experience completely unrelated good luck. Julius considers his "Lucky Socks" lucky because he was wearing them on the day he met his wife, Rochelle.
  • Daddy's Girl: This is exactly how Tonya is able to swindle Julius out of some pink carpet for her room.
  • Dreadful Musician: Drew sounds like nails on a chalkboard when he sings, being possibly the one thing he's not The Ace at.
  • Fatal Flaw: Julius' Parental Favoritism towards Tonya and Rochelle's Pride causes them to be exploited by Tonya and Drew, respectively.
  • Maybe Magic, Maybe Mundane: Julius insists that his "Lucky Socks" don't actually grant supernatural luck, and gives Chris the profound life lesson that he has to make his own luck in this world. Despite saying this, Chris does experience a long streak of good luck while wearing them that harshly comes to an end as soon as he loses them. Notably, it was Friday the 13th when he lost the socks. On the other hand he does manage to do well on his history assignment despite losing them and when he wears them at the end he still ends up tripping and falling down the stairs.
  • Shout-Out: A hockey-masked serial killer breaks into Chris' room in his dream, and instead of killing him, he just asks Chris for the date. It's Thursday the 12th.
