Oryx, the feared God-King of the Hive, is angry over the death of his son by the Guardians of the Last City. He arrives in the Solar System commanding his massive Dreadnaught, and also wields extremely powerful magic to create a Taken army, specters of enemies from other factions. To stop Oryx requires some of the boldest strategies ever attempted by the Guardian.

The Taken King contains examples of:

  • Bittersweet Ending: The conclusion of the Taken War sees Oryx defeated in the story and permanently killed in King's Fall, saving the rest of the Solar system and, with Crota and the Deathsinger twins dead, leaving the Osmium throne vacant and the Hive without a King. As side effects, the Vex are revealed to have failed to perfect the weapons in the Vault of Glass, the Prime Servitor of the House of Wolves has been destroyed, and the Cabal High Command in the Solar system has been all but wiped out. However, thousands of Awoken died at Saturn, with Queen Mara Sov presumed to be among them. There are also a number of threats gathering in the future, as the Cabal managing to successfully send a distress signal to the Cabal Emperor, who is sure to send reinforcements. Also, Xivu Arath and Savathûn, Oryx's sisters, are still out there, and there may be a fifth god named Nokris that is unaccounted for. Worst of all, Oryx may still be alive in the Touch of Malice and maybe trying to shape the player Guardian into a host for his soul or into his successor.
  • My Death Is Only The Beginning: You face down and defeat Oryx at the end of the campaign, but the way he handles his defeat calls into question if he was really defeated. As it turned out, he saved himself through an Ascendant Plane, a pocket dimension that prevents his death in the physical world. Even after beating him in Kingsfall, parts of his essence is used to create the Touch of Malice exotic weapon.
  • The Very Definitely Final Dungeon: After seeming defeating Oryx, you find out he has survived and the Raid involves scouring through the deepest sections of the Dreadnaught and into Oryx Ascendant Plane to bring him down for good.
  • Wave-Motion Gun: The Dreadnaught's primary weapon is a devastating wave of energy large enough to carve out a notable section of Saturn's rings.
  • Wham Episode: Mara Sov and the Awoken are defeated in the first counterattack against Oryx. Gameplay wise, the Dreadnaught is also the first new patrol space introduced since the original game, really making you feel like you are exploring strange and alien territory.
  • The Worf Effect: Mara Sov uses her own magic along with her aids to deploy a destructive attack against the Dreadnaught, but had no effect.
