On the scheduled date of January 28th, Light and the Task Force drive out to the Yellow Box warehouse to meet Near and the SPK in person. Light has arranged for the assassination of everyone there besides himself, thus removing the only remaining obstacles to Kira's power. Inside the warehouse, they meet Near, who is wearing a mask of L's likeness. He tells everyone to wait for the assassin and allow him to act.
Teru Mikami arrives outside with the Death Note and proceeds to write the names of the SPK and Task Force members, using his Shinigami eyes to determine that Light is Kira. Near reassures the Task Force that the notebook being used is a fake, but Light was aware of Near's plan to alter the notebook and had planned accordingly.Once the writing is done, both parties invite Mikami into the warehouse and the 40-second countdown begins. At 39 seconds, Light declares his victory to Near.

- Abandoned Warehouse: The Yellow Box, selected by Near due to its single entrance and isolation.
- Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Mikami counting down the seconds before the Death Note takes effect and everyone, sans Light and Mikami, dies.
- Dead Person Impersonation: Near's L Mask. Light is offended by this, which is ironic considering that he has taken on the title of L.
- Evil Gloating: Light does this inwardly after Near explains the plan to alter the notebook. By the end, he can no longer contain his glee and lets Near (and everyone else) know "I win."
- Gambit Pileup: The culmination of both Light and Near's plans.
- Gray Rain of Depression: January 28th turns out to be a rainy day.
- I Know You Know I Know: Light anticipated Near taking the "Death Note" and replacing it with a fake. In the last few episodes, Light planned ahead and had Mikami make his own fake notebook and make the killings as public as possible. While the SPK would think that Mikami was the one committing the murders, it was actually Takada who was carrying them out. So when the time came for the meeting at the Yellow Box, Near would take what he thought was the real notebook when it was the fake. In reality, Mikami had the real notebook hidden away and was using it to kill everyone at the warehouse.
- Inner Monologue: Light has an extensive one that is implied to flash through his mind in a split second, as time stops while it happens.
- Madness Mantra: Mikami's trademark "Delete! Delete! DELEEEEEETE!!"
- Magic Countdown: Over a minute of onscreen time passes (and this discounting the time Light was thinking over the plan in his head) between Mikami writing down the names in the notebook and him stating that it's only been thirty seconds.
- Screen Shake: When Mikami shows up at the Yellow Box, the screen shakes as he looks at everyone inside.
- Shoo Out the Clowns: Near has Misa shut up in a hotel suite during the day of the meeting.
- Team Power Walk: Light and the Task Force as they enter the warehouse to meet Near.
- Worthy Opponent: Subverted. Light is furious to see Near wearing an L mask and inwardly expresses contempt for him, calling him naive and soft.
