Rossi: Karl Kraus said, "A weak man has doubts before a decision, a strong man has them afterwards."
A man lost his son in an accident and blames the ER Doctor who didn't save him. He threatens the doctor's son and kills other people at random when the doctor hides his son.

Tropes

  • Bait-and-Switch: After the Previously on… reminds us of last episode's Cliffhanger, we open to a grim-faced Morgan approaching a crime scene. Then we see the crime scene isn't Hotch's apartment but something else entirely, and the reason Morgan's so upset is over the team being called back to work so soon after the last case.
  • Cold-Blooded Torture Foyet to Hotch.
  • Compensating for Something: Foyet takes offense at the psychological theory that stabbing is symbolic rape for the impotent assailant.
  • Cruel Mercy: Hotch's theory for why Foyet let him live.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Parts of Foyet torturing Hotch have decidedly rape vibes to it, particularly when Foyet addresses the topic of impotence and says "Maybe this will change your mind"...
  • Dramatic Irony: For the first part of the episode, the team isn't even aware that Hotch has been attacked. Viewers are of course waiting for an answer to it, which we don't get until they do.
  • God Complex: The UnSub targets a surgeon he considers to have this. The surgeon doesn't, but that's irrelevant to him.
  • Locked Out of the Loop: Once Emily realizes that Hotch was attacked, she only tells Reid and Garcia. The rest of the team isn't told until the current case is over.
  • No-Sell: Foyet shoots the wall behind Hotch...who doesn't even blink.
  • Outliving One's Offspring: The UnSub lost his son some time ago, and really isn't taking it well.
