Recap / Cold Case S 6 E 17 Officer Down

Go To

  • Bait-and-Switch: As usual for this series, the episode starts with a flashback with a caption revealing the date. But this episode twists it by adding the flashback is just five minutes old.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Done tragically, as Francisco tries to protect his brother as he was the one who shot and killed Pops because he wanted to protect his honor. This gets him suspected as the murderer, resulting in his death.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: Gabriel though that the best way to deal with a store owner that insulted you for theft is to shoot and kill him.
  • It's Personal: For the whole squad, after Will is shot.
  • Knight Templar Big Brother: A big part in why Gabriel kills Pops; He was angry at how Pops treated Francisco and wanted to protect his honor. However, not only had Francisco already made peace with Pops, even agreeing to a job in order to be a better role model, Gabriel’s murder of Pops also gets Francisco killed when he tries to take the fall for his brother, enraging Valentine into shooting him. At the end, Gabriel’s attempt at avenging Francisco ended up ruining several people (including his own) lives and Francisco ended up dying because of what he did.
  • Misplaced Retribution: Valentine kills Francisco under the belief the latter killed Pops. Pops' real killer was Gabriel.
  • Poor Communication Kills: Convenience store owner Pops got into a confrontation with two Hispanic boys, Francisco and Gabriel, over theft and insulted them. Francisco eventually made up with Pops, but Gabriel, not knowing about it, retaliated and shot at Pops and Detective Jeffries who happened to be in the store, killing the former. Then Pop's employee took revenge for Pops and kills Francisco, not knowing he had nothing to do with Pop's murder.
  • Wham Episode: Unlike most episodes, this one is about a recent murder instead of a cold case.
