Recap / Burn Notice S 7 E 2 Forget Me Not

Go To

In this episode things get a little rough for Michael. First of all he keeps having flashbacks to an Ireland that is meant to be 2001 but looks more like the 1950s.....

He and Andrew Strong return to Miami to try and catch Dexter Gamble before he can ruin Mike's deep cover operation back in the Dominican Republic. His friends are also working the case simultaneously but Strong forbids Michael from contacting them. He does speak to Madeline to warn her not to mention him again. Madeline is upset by his coldness and the fact she had no idea how or where he was for nine months.

Strong and Michael have bugged the gang and follow their leads. At the first place Michael has to intervene to shoot a sniper out of the window just as Carlos and Jesse are resolving to make a run for it to try and draw fire away from Fi and Sam and get more ammo and a car.

The second location turns out to be an empty house. Mike and Strong watch as the gang split up to surround it but unfortunately Gamble is on to them and when Fi goes to move him on (he is disguised as a gardener) she gets kidnapped. Michael is understandably furious and takes off over Strong's protests when he realises the plan for dealing with Gamble will get Fi killed.

He meets up with Sam, Jesse and Carlos. Sam and Jesse are hurt they haven't heard from him and Carlos attacks him. To make things worse Strong shows up and is furious Mike has made contact with his friends but Michael is able to convince him that he has a plan.

Michael speaks to Gamble on the phone as the warehouse is surrounded by a CIA team and offers him everything he wants (new identity, new money etc etc) in exchange for Fi. He also asks to speak to Fi so he can use a saying that her father used in Ireland which meant "drop to the floor, make a small target and pray you don't get hit". She does and the CIA team kills Gamble.

Afterwards Michael speaks to Fi and she expresses surprise he remembered the saying. Then she kisses him on the cheek and tells him to take care. He remembers watching her do this to her boyfriend from the pub in the first flashback and triumphantly telling the barman that that is the kind of kiss you give someone when things are over.

Tropes include

  • Call-Back: We see a flashback to a conversation only referenced before, when Mike asked Fi to dance, she greeted him with a revolver, and he said, "I assume that means yes".
  • Cold Sniper: Mike's initial role in the team's operation (when they're not aware he's back in Miami).
  • Drives Like Crazy. Strong is surprised at how quickly Mike's friends get to the safehouse. Mike's response? "Fi's driving."
  • I Have Your Wife: Or more accurately: "I have your ex-girlfriend who you still love"
  • Improbable Aiming Skills: Invoked by Mike. The others are firing blind and he hides a distance away with a sniper rifle. Fi's the only one who suspects it was something other than dumb luck that killed the gang member shooting at them.
  • Instant Sedation: Gamble puts a rag over Fi's face and she's out in about five seconds.
  • Screw the Rules, I'm Doing What's Right!: Michael isn't supposed to speak to his friends, tell them about the surveillance or directly help with their mission. Then Fi gets kidnapped....
