Recap / Bluey – "Mums and Dads"

Go To

When Indy and Rusty pretend to be parents, they struggle to agree on who should get a job. Later, Indy finds it hard to get a babysitter, and Bluey pretends Rusty is her baby.

Tropes:

  • Bait-and-Switch: When Bluey agrees to play with Rusty, it sets up for Bluey Taking a Third Option for who goes to work and who doesn’t, since both of her parents work…only for her to make Rusty the baby. Rusty is far from amused.
  • Desperately Needs Orders: Winton is recruited by Indy to play the eponymous game with her. He agrees to take care of the "baby" Polly, while Indy goes to "work"... only to keep pestering her by asking exactly what he's supposed to do in his role.
  • Divorce Is Temporary: In-Universe. Rusty and Indy's game of "Moms and Dads" initially ends with the two splitting apart over differences. But their respective attempts at finding a new "mom" or "dad" to complete the game comes up with very mixed results. Rusty's time with Bluey has the latter forcing the former to be the baby, and Indy can't find someone fit to be the "dad" in her game. Ultimately, their mutual split comes to an end once Indy and Rusty decide that perhaps, they should try again at playing the game together.
  • Does This Remind You of Anything?: Rusty and Indy having a big disagreement over how to play "Moms and Dads", and Calypso having to suggest they play separately, seems to bear more than a passing resemblance to a married couple having to separate. Later, the two deciding they should try playing together again parallels the couple trying again.
  • Hidden Depths: Bluey is strong enough to overpower Rusty, despite them being the same size.
  • Househusband: What Indy expects Rusty to be; presumably her own father fills a similar role.
  • Immediate Sequel: This episode begins right after "Early Baby", when Indy and Rusty agree to play the titular game of this episode.
  • Out Humbling Each Other: Initially, Indy and Rusty stop playing Mums and Dads together because they both want to be the one who leaves to go work a job. They try to play again after realizing the need for compromise... but this time they both insist on being the one to compromise by staying at home with baby Polly. This nearly makes them separate again, until they realize they can Take a Third Option.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: After being forced to be the baby when trying to play "Mums and Dads", Rusty spits out his pacifier in order to distract Bluey so he can make a break for it.
    Bluey: HEY! Runaway baby!
  • Sequel Episode: Unusually for Bluey, this episode continues exactly where the previous episode "Early Baby" left off, with Indy and Rusty raising Polly together.
  • Stay in the Kitchen: A non-malicious example since Rusty is a young child who doesn't know any better, but the episode's conflict starts because he insists that he's the one who should go to work for the "Mums and Dads" game, since "mums stay at home and take care of the kids". Indy takes issue with this, which causes them to separate until they work out a compromise.
  • Take a Third Option: When Rusty and Indy decide to try and play "Mums and Dads" together again, they start arguing over which of them should leave to go to work. A passing comment from Bluey gives them the idea to just pretend it's the weekend, so they can both stay home.
