Recap / Beetlejuice S 1 E 17 Prince Of The Neitherworld

Go To

Prince Vince, the morose ruler of the Neitherworld, needs a new Court Jester to help cheer him up, and Beetlejuice feels that he is just the ghost for the job. But things get complicated when the young Neitherworld royal falls in love with Lydia and asks for Beetlejuice's advice in winning her heart.

This episode contains examples of:

  • Big "WHAT?!": This is Beetlejuice's reaction to Prince Vince's proposal to Lydia, after initially misinterpreting the prince's courting of her as wanting to be her new best friend.
Lydia: This is wonderful, Prince Vince! I want all my friends to be your friends, too.
Prince Vince: Lydia, you must know how I feel about you!
Beetlejuice: (mockingly under his breath) "Lydia, you must know how I feel about you!"
Prince Vince: The time has come for me to ask… w-would you be my Princess?
    Beetlejuice: WHAT?!
  • Burning with Anger: When Prince Vince asks Lydia to marry him, Beetlejuice is so infuriated that steam starts coming out his ears.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Beetlejuice becomes this over the course of the episode towards Prince Vince's growing relationship with Lydia, to the point that he misinterprets the Prince's intentions and tries to sabotage their date.
Beetlejuice: Oh no! How could I be so stupid? I taught that pathetic little potentate how to act like me, and now he wants to be Lydia's best friend! Thinks he can take her away from me, does he? (rolls up his sleeves)
  • Dramatically Missing the Point: At first, Beetlejuice was all for helping Prince Vince woo Lydia in exchange for getting the Court Jester position (and as a result, being able to get away with any prank he pulls on the rest of the court members), but once he sees Lydia start to genuinely enjoy Vince's company, he misinterprets this as Vince wanting to replace him as Lydia's best friend, and sets out to sabotage the relationship.
  • The Eeyore: Prince Vince, full stop. He's a very moody young man who waxes poetic about just how miserable and lonely he is, which usually prompts quite a few of his servants to say, "Is he a bummer or what?"
Lydia: Pleased to meet you, Your… Highness?
Prince Vince: "Highness"? No. "Lowness" would be more fitting, Lydia.
  • Let's Just Be Friends: While Lydia is flattered by Vince's attempts to woo her and his proposal, she lets him down as easy as she can and tells him that she's "not quite ready for Princessdom", and is just happy having him as a friend.
  • Love at First Sight: One-sided. Prince Vince becomes utterly enamored with Lydia the moment he lays eyes on her.
  • Weather Manipulation: Prince Vince has the ability to change the weather within his general vicinity based on his mood. And since he's in a constant state of depression, it's almost always raining, even indoors.
  • You Have GOT to Be Kidding Me!: This is Beetlejuice's initial reaction when Prince Vince asks for his help to win Lydia's heart. But once he realizes that this can be used to his advantage and land him the job as Court Jester (and all the perks that come with it), he quickly changes his tune.
Beetlejuice: You gotta be… (pouts for a moment until the sound of a cash register is heard) …the LUCKIEST Prince I know!
