Esther seeks to step into Betty Winter's role in the film production, showcasing her deeper understanding of the thematic aspects of the film and its characters.

Nyssen deceives his mother into signing over power of attorney for a large amount of company funds to him. He then invests those funds - 106 million Marks - in shorting the market by the year's end.

The police spread across the city to search for Weintraub, including arresting The Armenian, who refuses to divulge his whereabouts under interrogation. Gereon suggests an unorthodox method - "criminal telepathy", claiming he knows a practitioner.

Esther visits Weintraub, who has been hidden at the film studio, promising to rescue all of their fortunes.

Horst attempts to "rescue" a prostitute he has fallen in love with from her communist pimp, bringing her to live with him as his fiancee. Stennes visits Wendt and Horst searching for the missing Richard Pechtmann; Horst mentions the visit from Gereon, who had posed as a Munich party boss named "Schneider"; Stennes advises Horst move accomodations immediately.

After his story on illegal rearmament went public in the previous episode, Katelbach is pursued by the political police for treason. Wendt pressures Gereon into accompanying him in a search of Frau Behnke's apartments. Gereon discovers Katelbach's hidden room and threatens Frau Behnke with arrest for harboring a fugitive...but this is soon revealed to all be for show, Gereon having secretly stowed Katelbach in his own apartments.

Gereon visits Helga at the hotel, and discovers that her mysterious benefactor "A" is in truth Alfred Nyssen. Helga refuses to accompany him home, and claims to have lost their baby in a miscarriage - when Nyssen attempts to defuse the situation, Gereon assaults him.

Frau Behnke enlists Hans Litten's assistance in defending Katelbach. Afterwards, she is approached by Marie-Luise Seegers, who offers to obtain copies of documents exposing the Black Reichswehr's conspiracy against the republic for them.

Gereon and Charlotte attend Detective Graef's birthday party. When Graef sings a romantic song, Gereon and Charlotte sneak away temporarily and give in to long-simmering sexual tensions.

Ominously, one of Wendt's lieutenants hires the communist pimp to murder Horst.

Tropes:

  • Back-Alley Doctor: The "cheaper" doctor to whom Charlotte is referred.

  • Big Damn Kiss: Gereon and Charlotte.

  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Gereon showcases this aspect of his personality yet again, barely controlling a seething rage upon seeing Helga with Nyssen and eventually flying off the chain to assault him.

  • Dirty Old Man: Toni gets a job reading to a much older man, who apparently has a strange fetish for young girls reading out loud.

  • German Expressionism: The film's heavy aspects of this style are most prominent in this episode.

  • Held Gaze: Gereon and Charlotte during Graef's song.

  • I Didn't Tell You Because You'd Be Unhappy: Helga lies to Gereon about the termination of her pregnancy. She has yet to get an abortion.

  • Internal Reveal: Gereon learns that Helga's mysterious benefactor is Alfred Nyssen.

  • Ship Tease: Gereon and Charlotte; Graef and Jacoby, the assistant editor at Tempo.
