Councilor Wendt, heavily spooked by Gereon's inquiries and Litten's appeals, secretly meets Richard in a forest. Richard attempts to leverage Wendt into giving him money to flee, but Wendt, taking no chances, kills him instead.

Gereon and Weintraub recuperate in the hospital, the latter under heavy police guard and being vilified as the murderer by the press. Esther, the Armenian's wife, pleads the case of his innocence, believing Weintraub would never betray The Armenian after taking a prison term in the latter's place. The Armenian refuses to listen, being fixated on the "Judas" analogy.

Litten is informed that his appeal has been ignored and that Greta's execution is being expedited. Greta, still fearing for the life of her son, attempts to come to terms with her imminent death.

Charlotte attempts to get surgery done for her sister's infected eye, but finds the costs prohibitive. One doctor gives her a referral to a "cheaper" doctor in the slums. Desperate for money to pay him, Charlotte briefly returns to her old life and participates in an explicit role-playing sex show.

Moritz has difficulty fitting in with the Hitler Youth, being teased and getting into fights with the other boys.

Wendt contacts Nyssen, offering a way back into the conservative camarilla if Nyssen can make enough money on the market crash. When asked where to find sufficient capital for such an investment, Wendt suggests Nyssen ask his mother, still head of the Nyssen AG conglomerate.

The Armenian consults Gereon in the hospital regarding Weintraub's guilt, eventually abducting the latter from police custody to seek his own vengeance. Under interrogation, Weintraub reveals that he was knocked out by the real killer, dressed in the Phantom costume, and framed for Vera's murder. He also confesses to being in love with Esther.

Tropes:

  • Cassandra Truth: Wendt consults Marie-Luise Seegers, of all people, on whether Nyssen's portents of economic doom are feasible. She echoes his sentiments but from a hardline Marxist standpoint.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Gereon angrily berates Helga, voicing his paranoia that Helga has been cheating on him and gotten pregnant by the man who signs his notes as "A".
  • Have You Told Anyone Else?: Richard Pechtmann aka "Fritz" comes to Wendt with a blackmail demand in Season 3. Wendt asks if Richard has told anyone else he was coming, and when Richard answers in the negative, Wendt shoots and kills him.
  • Herr Doktor: Anno/Dr. Schmidt dresses like the classic archetype in his appearance.
  • Electroconvulsive Therapy Is Torture: The Armenian subjects Weintraub to this to bring him back to consciousness and interrogate him.
  • Good Girls Avoid Abortion: Helga, a devout Catholic, struggles with this dilemma.
  • Ship Tease: Katelbach and Frau Behnke
  • Sworn Brothers: Horst makes an appeal to racial and national solidarity as part of the Nazi creed in order to defuse a conflict between Moritz and another boy. He has them touch a Nazi flag as the symbol of their unity and camaraderie. A major element of Nazi ritual and ceremony was the symbolic touching of the Blutfahne, or Bloody Banner, a metaphor for the flag stained by the blood of the martyrs of the 1923 Beer Hall Putsch.
  • Too Dumb to Live: Richard attempts to essentially blackmail the very powerful and unscrupulous Wendt, and even tells him that he has informed no one of his whereabouts or intention to meet him when asked!
  • Two-Headed Coin: In the flashback, Weintraub flips a coin to determine who will go to prison between himself and The Armenian. While pleading Weintraub's innocence, Esther reveals that the coin was rigged all along.
