Recap / All Hail King Julien S 06 E 08 Blackboard Jungle

Go To

When King Julien enters the lemur youth in an island wide academic competition, he realizes the lemur education system is terribly out of date, and sets out to reform it, to the complaints of some of the older citizens of the kingdom.

Tropes:

  • Chased Off into the Sunset: The episode ends with everyone chasing after Julien and Pancho, who stole the trophy.
  • Cheaters Never Prosper: Julien resorts to simply stealing the competition answer key and having Todd use his photographic memory to memorize the entire thing, which gets the Lemurs into the tie breaking round, but the Crocodile Ambassador has decided to replace the usual lightning round tie breaker with a discussion based question to reward actual learning instead of memorizing facts, which leaves Todd in the dust.
  • Cheek Copy: King Julien flashes back to when he was copying his butt on the “butt camera” (a copy machine that washed up on the shore)
  • Hand Wave: This is the first episode where any of the main four have had any knowledge of the kingdom's education curriculum for children. How did they all miss on it growing up?
    • King Julien: As the prince, he learned with a private tutor.
    • Maurice: As the prince was not that smart, he was allowed to learn with the same private tutor so Julien would have someone to copy off of.
    • Clover: Like in "Revenge of the Prom", her warrior training simply existed outside of the traditional lemur school system.
    • Mort: He's so old he predates the education system.
  • "I Know What We Can Do" Cut: After the Crocodile Ambassador's speech about education not being about rote memorization, Julien realizes the error of his ways and announces "I know now what I must do!" Cut to him and Pancho running away with the trophy.
  • Odd Name Out: Most Aye-Aye have names that start with R but with a B added on, here we see an Aye-Aye child named "B'Brandon", which is a name that already starts with B-R with an extra B added on.
  • Photographic Memory: This turns out to be how Todd operates; he simply remembers lines and can recite them by rote.
  • Shout-Out: The episode is named after the 1955 drama film Blackboard Jungle.
  • Time Abyss: While examining why none of the gang had ever learned from King Julien the Terrible's textbooks, Mort remarks he never did because he's so old that he features in the history section as an Adam and Eve figure.
Julien: Mort, how freaking old are you?!
