Go To

South Crenshaw is playing against Westlake for the playoffs, where a recruiter from Toledo State University will be watching. It also happens on the same day as Coop's 18th birthday, with Spencer reminiscing about the things he, Coop, and Shawn used to promise years ago. Meanwhile, Grace's mother, Wendy, visits Beverly Hills for the indictment against the officers who shot Tamika Pratt, while Jordan learns about his grandmother Mary.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Birthday Episode: Takes place during Coop's 18th birthday.
  • Break His Heart to Save Him: Mary went to the hospice because she didn't want Billy to give up his dreams of becoming an NFL player, and Willie deliberately let Billy think he sent her there out of spite for the same reason.
  • The Bus Came Back: Patience returns for the first time since her departure for her tour in "Cancelled".
  • Category Traitor: Spencer accuses Cameron of compromising his values by not taking the knee for Tamika Pratt.
  • Cool Old Lady: Wendy Fine ends up saving both her daughter and granddaughter from the wrath of the LAPD, using her connections to get Olivia out of indictment without compromising Laura's position.
  • Disproportionate Retribution: The LAPD want to indict Olivia, a minor, for having leaked a police video.
  • Follow in My Footsteps: Much like how Willie was a football player like Billy and Jordan, Wendy was a lawyer just like Laura.
  • Happy Flashback: There are a couple of flashbacks set eight years ago, showing what Spencer, Coop, and Shawn promised when they turn 18.
  • Irony: Shawn wished to be alive when he turns 18, which of course didn't happen since he was killed at age 16.
  • Luke, You Are My Father: The episode ends with Preach meeting a girl named Amina, who introduces herself as his daughter.
  • O.O.C. Is Serious Business: Cam is not in the mood to taunt Spencer this time, because he is guilty of not taking the knee to honor Tamika.
  • Screw This, I'm Outta Here: Laura decides to quit being a district attorney, despite her mother having found a loophole to free Olivia, because she no longer wants to be a part of the system.
  • Shout-Out: Spencer compares his therapist to The Boondocks.
  • Talking to the Dead: Coop visits Shawn's grave to talk about her 18th birthday.
