Go To

Spencer is insecure about Asher moving in with Layla, but he cannot communicate this clearly because he was afraid of repeating the same mistake that cost him his relationship with Kia a year ago. Meanwhile, Olivia feels neglected by her family ahead of her one-year sobriety, while Coop gets the news from her father that her mother may finally be ready to accept her back home, which will resolve the threat of being evicted from her apartment unless she is emancipated.

Tropes featured in this episode:

  • Blackmail: Reggie wants Coop back home because Tyrone promised her, and he had got into Reggie's business and threatened to fire him if he didn't make her return.
  • Crazy Jealous Guy: Spencer is trying hard not to do this, but he is repeating the same jealousy flaw with Layla that ended his relationship with Kia. He reveals that his issues with his absent dad cause him to believe that everyone will leave him eventually.
  • Disappeared Dad: Coop's father, Reggie, is away most of the time. While he adores her, his absence means that he doesn't really have much say regarding whether she can return home after Janelle kicked her out.
  • Emancipated Child: Coop tries to get her parents sign emancipation papers so she can continue living in her apartment. In the end, they do.
  • Flashback: There are flashbacks focusing on Spencer and Olivia a year ago, detailing how the former broke up with Kia and how the latter's descent to drugs nearly killed her.
  • Friendship Moment: After resolving his issues, Spencer reconciles with Asher. In return for his advice regarding Layla, Spencer offers to help Asher regain trust from the other members of the team.
  • Group Hug: The Bakers do this after Olivia accepts her one-year sobriety medallion.
  • Kissing Under the Influence: We finally see how Olivia and Asher, in their moment of weakness, slept together after getting drunk.
  • Love Confession: After making up, Layla tells Spencer that she loves him, and he says it back.
  • Open-Minded Parent: In contrast to her mother, Reggie Cooper accepts his daughter's lesbianism, stating that it will not prevent him from loving her like before.
  • Parental Neglect: Olivia feels that her parents and Jordan don't pay much attention to her on the run up to her sobriety celebration. It's revealed that she was using drugs in the first place because of the same reason.
