Simon Petrikov, feeling completely out of place and isolated in a world not his own since regaining his sanity, prepares to take desperate measures while an old friend attempts to get him out of his funk.
Tropes
- Bloodless Carnage: Averted. Hard. The mudskipper is spraying blood from its wound, and Simon is bleeding copiously when the grass bear scratches him.
- Continuity Nod:
- Simon mentions wearing Ice King's old clothes as a coping mechanism, which was seen in the Adventure Time: Distant Lands episode "Obsidian", which took place two years beforehand.
- Choose Goose is still shown to be evil after drinking the ichor of Coconteppi in the Distant Lands finale "Wizard City".
- Cliffhanger: The episode ends with Cake flying out of a portal behind Simon's head, causing the two of them to look at each other confused as the scene cuts to a pink flashing button appearing on Prismo's TV remote.
- Crazy Sane: Simon notes that when he was Ice King, he was too insane to see himself as out of place in the Land of Ooo. After returning to normal, he now sees himself as a Fish out of Temporal Water, unable to relate to anyone in the present. Simon admits that he sometimes misses being Ice King for this reason, since he was at least too crazy to understand just how different his life has become.
- Distant Prologue: The episode begins with a flashback to Simon and Marceline surviving in the wasteland, over a thousand years prior, before cutting back to present day.
- Downer Ending: Despite Finn's efforts to cheer up Simon, the latter ends the episode still feeling disconnected from the world arround him and goes through with his plans to summon Golbetty.
- Eye Scream: Simon stabs a mudskipper in the eye with a spear.
- Freeze-Frame Bonus: You can read the names on Simon's phone when he calls Marceline. He's apparently still in contact with the likes of Abracadaniel, Gunther, and even Island Lady from "The Party's Over, Isla De Señorita". It's also notable that he doesn't have any contacts that start with the letter J.
- Innocently Insensitive: Dirt Beer Guy, Finn and TV keep accidentally pushing Simon's Trauma Button by talking about his time as the Ice King and how he made Fionna and Cake. Finn in particular seems to not see how Simon's problem is how he doesn't fit in the 31st century, seeing he should take Simon on a quest to deal with it and achieving very little.
- Neck Snap: How Finn dispatches of the grass-like bear that attacks Simon, squeezing its neck until it snaps from the pressure.
- Sad-Times Montage: Simon has one after Finn leaves him to head back to Up-Ton alone, walking through the woods and seeing creatures and people that remind him of just how detached he feels from the world, all while the song "Part of the Madness" plays.
