Recap / Accused 2023 S 1 E 3 Danny's Story

Go To

When a young boy's (Reid Miller) mother dies, he descends into paranoia that her homecare nurse (Rachel Bilson), who is also his father's (Jack Davenport) new squeeze, was responsible. The episode is a remake of the British Accused series episode "Stephen's story."

  • Adaptational Name Change: The main character's name is changed from Stephen Cartwright to Danny Wheeler.
  • Adaptational Villainy: The episode "Tina's Story" from the original series suggests that Stephen Cartwright's stepmother was innocent, with Stephen's final conversation with her being a hallucination. Here, Allison is genuinely guilty.
  • Amoral Attorney: Danny's lawyer doesn't take his claims about Alison seriously and railroads him into agreeing to a psychological evaluation or she'll call for a competency hearing.
  • The Bad Guy Wins: Allison literally gets away with murder and successfully has the one person who could have brought her to justice institutionalized with no onscreen or mentioned repercussions for her actions.
  • Big Brother Instinct: Danny's actions are partially motivated by a desire to protect his younger brother Matthew.
  • Bitch in Sheep's Clothing: Alison is a real pro at this.
  • Death by Adaptation: John and potentially Matthew, as the original series revealed that Stephen Cartwright imagined his stepmother's implication that she was poisoning his father and brother.
  • Downer Ending: Danny is committed to a mental institution, and Alison gets away with killing his mother, his dog, his father and is working on his brother.
  • Insanity Defense: Danny's lawyer, presumably because she was told by his father about his uncle's illness, believes he has schizophrenia and gets him to agree to a psych evaluation so he can be put in a mental hospital for treatment instead of spending years in prison.
  • In the Blood: Danny and Matt's maternal uncle is mentioned to have been schizophrenic, which led to his suicide years earlier. This leads others to suspect Danny's issues are the result of him having the same illness.
  • Karmic Death: John Wheeler's death can be considered this as he was dating his first wife's hospice nurse while his wife was dying and then, without really considering how it would affect his sons, moves his new girlfriend into the house not that long after.
  • Karma Houdini: Alison has managed to murder two people and is working on doing the same to one of their children while having the other committed to a psych ward, and get away with it.
  • Properly Paranoid: As the end of the episode reveals, Danny was right all along about Alison.
  • The Remake: Of the British Accused episode "Stephen's Story."
  • Remarried to the Mistress: John Wheeler to Alison.
  • Wrongfully Committed: Danny was right about Alison, but ends up committed to a mental hospital for stabbing her.
