The trio, now on the run from both Olaf and the authorities hitchhike with a troupe of V.F.D. members - Volunteers Fighting Disease that is. They head to a hospital, and uncover some rather unsettling news from the late Jacques Snicket.

- Cat Scare: WE ARE VOLUNTEERS, FIGHTING DISEASE AND WE'RE CHEERFUL ALL DAY LONG! IF SOMEONE SAID THAT WE WERE SAD, THAT PERSON WOULD BE WROONG!
- Creepy Twins: Invoked by the Powder-Faced Women, who mimic the creepy twins from The Shining by appearing at the end of a hallway and asking to play while scaring Babs.
- Disaster Dominoes: Esmé knocks over the many archive cabinets in the library while pursuing the Baudelaires.
- Follow the Bouncing Ball: The first song the Volunteers Fighting Disease perform for the Baudelaires is accompanied by on-screen lyrics with a bouncing heart.
- Key Confusion: Esmé runs into this problem when she wants to capture the Baudelaires in the library, but can't find the right key among the dozens of keys on the keychain. She gets quite frustrated, even attempting to force a wrong key in the lock. By the time she gets in, the Baudelaires have found the film they were looking for and already partly watched it.
- Leaning on the Fourth Wall: After spending a bit too long clicking through security footage, Olaf proclaims that he hates boring television before glancing briefly at the camera.
- Oblivious Guilt Slinging: After the Baudelaires steal his keys, Hal wakes up and proclaims how much he trusts them.
- Your Other Left:Olaf: I see movement! Go left! Your other left! Your other other left!
