Following the death of 'Count Olaf', the Baudelaires are imprisoned and sentenced to death by the town elders. The trio need to use all their wits and guile to escape and confront the true killer, and save the Quagmires in the process.
Tropes:
- Bait-and-Switch Gunshot: Esmé declares her intention to shoot down Hector before firing her crossbow. It hits something, the characters looked shocked, and a spurt of red liquid splashes — but she just hit Hector's supply of cranberry juice.
- A Birthday, Not a Break: While locked up in prison, Klaus remembers it's his birthday.
- Climbing Climax: The Quagmires and the Baudelaires have to climb all the way up to Hector's self-sustaining mobile home as Esmé tries to shoot it down. The Baudelaires eventually let their friends go and escape on their own.
- Shaming the Mob: Jacquelyn and Larry attempt to shame the Torches and Pitchforks that Olaf and Esmé have roused up against the Baudelaires, to no avail.
