Basic Trope: A work is set a few years into the future from its release with a few technology upgrades.
- Straight: The Adventures of Alice and Bob is released in 2020. The film is set in 2030 with laser guns and robots.
- Exaggerated: The film is set in February 2025 (and released a month prior) and the film has a Mega City, Cyborgs and lots of interesting technology.
- Downplayed: The film is set in 2050 and nothing has changed other than one of the main characters being a robot.
- Inverted: The film is set in 1996 and it still has everything that looks cool.
