Basic Trope Description: An intoxicated character tries to hide their intoxication while interacting with law enforcement, but it doesn't work.

  • Straight: After a wild party, Hard-Drinking Party Girl Alice is driving home drunk and stopped by the police. When she is interrogated, she doesn't get the words right and uses Spoonerisms like "Sorry Ociffer".
  • Exaggerated: Alice is so drunk that she only mumbles nonsense and so unstable that she starts attacking the police officers, and still tries to hide her intoxication.
  • Downplayed: Alice has a remarkable Alcohol Hic several times and smells like alcohol while speaking to the police, but not more.
  • Justified: Alice just drank far too much alcohol that night to be still able to hide it and found no one else to drive her home.
  • Inverted: Alice is in fact sober and plays drunk towards the police since she wants to distract them from her drunk-driving friends.
  • Subverted:
    • Alice talks to the police officer with a frequent hiccup, and her car smells like alcohol, but it is just a normal hiccup, Alice's speech tends to get a little blurry when excited and a bottle of booze fell over on the back seat.
    • Alice isn't drunk, she's concussed.
  • Double Subverted: On top of all that, Alice is really drunk.
  • Enforced: The author wants to ridicule Alice for drunk driving to teach An Aesop.
  • Averted: Alice isn't stopped by the police.
  • Parodied: The police officer is just as drunk as Alice and speaks with the same blurry speech.
  • Lampshaded: "Oh, no, police...in my state, this will lead to a funny encounter..."
  • Discussed: "How they always try to hide being drunk from us is somewhat amusing, isn't it?"
  • Conversed: "Dude, Not Funny!! Drunk driving is really reckless!"
  • Deconstructed: Alice's self-control is so loose in her state that she can't stop herself from Flipping the Bird at the police officer and ends up before the judge for both drunk driving and insulting a police officer.
  • Played for Laughs: Alice tells the policeman all kinds of funny and embarassing stuff while trying to hide being drunk.
  • Played for Drama: Alice is accidentally really vile to the police officer while trying to hide her drunkenness. When she gets knowledge about what she did, she becomes The Atoner.
