Basic Trope: A character's intelligence and their preference in long-range attacks synergize.

  • Played Straight: Alice is the smart girl of her team. When they fight, she doesn't use martial arts like the others, instead she uses a gun, and has displayed Improbable Aiming Skills.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice is the Omnidisciplinary Scientist and the greatest sharpshooter to ever live, but is completely worthless in close-quarter combat.
    • All scientists are experts with firearms, bows or crossbows.
    • All shooters have PHDs.
  • Most Logical Extreme: Alice is an omniscient being who can use energy blasts, and has never missed one of her targets because she already knows their actions.
  • Downplayed: Alice, the smart girl, carries a gun and a sword like the rest of her team, but she uses the gun more often than the sword, while the reverse is true for her teammates.
  • Inverted:
    • Alice is a Dumb Muscle that solves all of her problems by swinging her arms, but cannot deal with things she can't reach.
    • Alice isn't very bright, but she carries a 16-barreled missile launcher, and against any opponent she only has to pull the trigger.
    • Alice uses her knowledge of martial arts, physics and human anatomy to beat much stronger opponents in melee.
  • Justified:
    • Alice is an expert in ballistics, which require knowledge in mathematics and physics.
    • Alice is a Black Mage where Magic Is Mental; she had to study to throw fireballs.
    • Alice is one of the few people smart enough to understand ranged warfare and weapons.
    • Alice isn't as strong as the other adventurers, so she decides to use a weapon where strength is irrelevant: a gun.
  • Averted:
    • Everybody shoots guns the same way regardless of their intelligence.
    • Nobody uses ranged attacks.
    • Nobody is particularly smart.
  • Parodied: Universities are shooting ranges in this setting.
  • Exploited: The adventurers ask the group's ranged specialist to solve any puzzles they come across.
  • Subverted: Alice looks smart, but her mentor, Bob, has never touched a gun in his life.
  • Double Subverted: Bob shows off his skills using a bow and arrows in the present, and defeating the firearm-wielding opponents.
  • Implied: While we don't know much of Alice the sniper's private life, we know that she studied at an university.
  • Enforced: The writers are using a Brains Versus Brawn theme for the main characters; all "Brawn" characters fight in close quarters, so the "Brains" fight with ranged attacks.
  • Invoked: Alice is a Gadgeteer Genius, and she makes her own weapons.
  • Lampshaded: "I've studied physics, chemistry, psychology, history, and shooting people in the head".
  • Discussed: ???
  • Conversed: ???
  • Deconstructed: Alice tries to pick up guns because she's smart but not good in melee, but she also can't handle the recoil of small firearms.
  • Reconstructed: ???
  • Played For Laughs: Alice pulls off very ridiculously intricate shots thanks to her intelligence.
  • Played For Drama: ???
  • Played For Horror: ???
