  • Basic Trope: A character narrowly escapes a dangerous situation, only to find themselves in another situation that's much, much worse.
  • Straight: Bob is being chased by the police, and escapes into the woods...where he's attacked by a bear.
  • Exaggerated: Bob escapes from the police, and finds Satan himself in the woods.
    • Alternatively, he finds God, who is not pleased about...whatever he did to get the cops after him.
    • It keeps on getting worse and worse.
  • Downplayed: The bear is injured and cannot run very fast, but it still wants to maul Bob.
  • Justified:
  • Inverted: Bob gets his Mean Boss at work fired, and ends up becoming the manager.
  • Subverted: Bob escapes from the police, and sees a bear. However, the bear turns out to be Beary Friendly.
  • Double Subverted: ...Because it wasn't hungry. But now that it sees Bob...
  • Parodied: Every time Bob escapes from danger, that very same bear will appear to administer justice, no matter where he is.
  • Zig-Zagged: Bob finds a bear, but it's not hungry so it leaves him alone. But then it does get hungry and starts chasing him. Good thing he kept food for the bear... Except it's not enough and the bear starts chasing him again, but then the bear sees the cops and attacks them instead.
  • Averted: Bob escapes from the police, and there is no bear in sight.
  • Enforced: This scene was the wrong way example of a Right Way/Wrong Way Survival Tip.
  • Lampshaded:
Whew, that was close...Is that a bear? OH GOD! OH GOD!
  • Invoked: Bob runs into the woods, hoping the bear will attack his pursuers.
  • Exploited: Which it does.
  • Defied: Bob thinks about running into the woods, but then thinks that there could be bears, which would be even worse...and so he decides against it.
  • Discussed:
  • Conversed:
  • Implied: The cops lament that Bob is gone...but then they hear very loud screaming in the woods, along with a bear growling.
  • Deconstructed: Bob tries to run from the bear...to no avail.
  • Reconstructed:
  • Played For Laughs: The bear insists that it's friendly, but now Bob is horrified by the fact that it can talk.
  • Played For Drama:
  • Played For Horror: Bob is brutally mauled by the bear, and there's no Gory Discretion Shot to save the viewer's eyes.
