Go To

Basic Trope: The ability to consume energy of one type or another, and use it to power other abilities.

  • Straight: Alice can absorb electricity and use it to power her attacks.
  • Exaggerated:
    • Alice can absorb any kind of energy and return it as any other kind of energy. Any attempt to hurt her makes her stronger.
    • Every character in the series has some sort of ability to absorb one sort of energy.
    • Alice can absorb the energy of the entire universe.
  • Downplayed: Alice can absorb small amount of electricity from things like batteries, and cannot reuse it.
  • Justified:
    • Alice is an alien lifeform, absorbing electricity is how her species power the autotrophic reactions that feed them.
    • Alice is an elemental mage, and absorbing her element is a natural extension of her powers.
    • Alice wears armor / is made of a conducting material, which is already known to absorb energy and dish it back out.
  • Inverted: Alice can discharge a vast amount of energy; see Elemental Powers.
  • Subverted: It looks like Alice can absorb energy: but she was just using her electrical powers to redirect it harmlessly into the ground.
  • Double Subverted: With a little extra training, Alice is able to absorb such electricity and use it to make her more powerful.
  • Parodied:
    • Alice find the energy absorption… stimulating, and she lights up a cigarette while panting after being hit by lightning.
    • Alice is a nordic troll, and reacting to her insults only makes her stronger. Don’t feed the trolls!
    • Alice has “Please tase me, bro” written on her shirt, in the hopes that someone will zap her and give her a boost.
  • Zig Zagged: At first Alice can only redirect electrify, but then she leans to absorb it and empower herself. Damage to her body from this technique forces her to stop using it, and she then learns to absorb life energy. She goes mad with power, heals herself of the damage, and learns to absorb other forms of energy, becoming one of the most dangerous beings in the setting…Before accidently trying to drain energy from The Undead Bob, and being poisoned by it.
  • Averted: No character can absorb energy, despite a wide variety of other superpowers in-series.
  • Enforced: It’s a metaphor for how to recharge the batteries on action figures of Alice.
  • Lampshaded:
    • “C’mon, hit me with that lighting bolt, see what happens.”
    • “Your every move only makes me stronger!”
  • Invoked:
  • Exploited:
    • Emperor Evilz knows Alice can absorb electricity, and finds a way to make radioactive lighting in order to kill her from within.
    • Phlebotinum Overload
    • Bob guesses than Alice can absorb electricity, and gets her to fight Evilz within an electrified pool in order to give her a competitive edge.
  • Defied:
    • Emperor Evilz realizes from Alice’s cocky stance that she can absorb the rays of his lighting gun, so he settles for just poisoning her.
    • Bob guesses that Alice can absorb electricity and demands to fight her as faraway from technology as he can manage.
  • Discussed: “Doctor, can you explain how Alice has that natty ability to eat lighting?
  • Conversed: “Y’know, in these shows you really have to wonder why they don’t try to find a way to stop them from absorbing energy until AFTER they have enough to be a problem."
  • Implied: Alice is hit by a lighting bolt with seemingly no effect, and seems to fight faster and more powerfully afterward; but no outright mention of energy absorption.
  • Deconstructed:
    • Alice has a storage limit for how much power she cam absorb at a given time. If she tries to go beyond it, she suffers Power Incontinence and wildly discharges all the absorbed power at once, putting everyone around her in danger. That means if she goes against an an opponent that's either too strong or can simply generate too much of a type of energy to absorb, she's at a big disadvantage.
    • Alice can absorb any type of energy, but she can't absorb cold or darkness because it's the absence of energy, while radioactivity is downright lethal. Even for more familiar energies like heat and electricity, she lacks the Required Secondary Powers to avoid being hurt by them, and so she can only absorb small amounts at once without burning herself. Energy Absorption is generally Awesome, but Impractical.
  • Reconstructed: ???

You flamed the Energy Absorption page? You fool! You’ve only made it stronger!
