Basic Trope: The darkest and edgiest point in a given narrative.

  • Straight: The hero's band is battling against enormous amounts of mooks, waiting for death or rescue by The Cavalry, which are tied up in a battle against the Big Bad and their personal guard.
  • Exaggerated: The Big Bad's plan has already succeeded - most of the population is enslaved, and such a stranglehold is in effect that La Resistance is struggling to get off the ground. Most of the original hero's party is deceased, including the hero himself.
  • Advertisement:
  • Downplayed: The Big Bad provides the hero's band with the toughest fight of the entire adventure. For a few moments after the activation of the Big Bad's secret weapon, they appear to be unstoppable.
  • Justified: Villains must prove they are a credible threat at some point - likewise, heroes will have appropriate character flaws or weaknesses that may be taken advantage of.
  • Inverted: The Big Bad has gone into hiding with his Mooks. Everyone is getting along and there's no heroics needed for a while. This isn't the end of the story, however, so much as a breather amidst the action.
  • Subverted:
    • The Big Bad and the Cavalry stalemate as the heroes whittle down the mooks. At this rate, the heroes will be able to win their fight, join with the Cavalry and take out the Big Bad for an easy victory.
    • Something that looks superficially like a catastrophe is not one at all, and may even be a good thing. This may be known at the time, or it may be revealed later.

  • Double Subverted: Unfortunately, the Big Bad has an infinite (or effectively infinite) power source that enables them to keep going, while the Cavalry tire out and begin to get picked off one by one. The heroes are not set to offer any help - if anything, they have only managed to kill the most basic mooks while the more powerful ones continue to harass them.
