Nightmare Fuel / Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken

Go To

  • After accidentally knocking him out with a confetti cannon, Ruby is forced to go into the water to save Connor from drowning, but the pounding surfs of the ocean prevent her from even getting close to him. She gets caught in seaweed and it seems she's about to drown too. Fortunately, this is the point where Ruby's Giant Kraken powers activate for the first time.
  • After Chelsea takes credit for Connor's rescue, Ruby starts to have a panic attack, with her point-of-view getting blurry and her classmates' chatter becoming eerily distorted, showing that Ruby has no idea what's happening to her or how to process it all.
  • Ruby panicking as she grows inside the library and accidentally destroys it.
  • When Ruby leaves the Kraken Kingdom for home, she gets caught in a trap set by Gordon Lighthouse, who then proceeds to fire harpoons at Ruby which she barely dodges, only to be saved at the last minute by Chelsea.
    • When the harpoons don't work, Gordon tries to finish her off with a BOMB!
    • Lest we forget, all of this is happening to a frightened teenage girl. In all fairness, Gordon didn't know that at the time, but it doesn't make it any less scary.
  • Ruby has another panic attack when the townsfolk (including her friends and her crush) discuss the destruction caused by her "rampage". Her anxiety only increases when Trevin uploads Gordon's video of her for the whole town to see, causing her to freak out and hide in the bathroom.
  • After Chelsea reveals her true colors as the Mermaid Queen, she outright STABS poor Ruby in the arm with the Trident, weakening her, buries her under rocks, and leaves her for dead. Granted, we never see any blood from Ruby's injury and the worse we see it do to her is sap her strength, but it's still a harrowing sight to see in a kids' movie.
    • Ruby's shriek of pain when it happens only further sells the horror of the act.
    • Nerissa herself is also quite demonic in appearance after Chelsea gets the Trident when we see her start to turn into her giant true form, showing that this universe's mermaids are pure evil and as the Mermaid Queen, she's utterly vile and cruel.
  • The Final Battle between the Krakens and Nerissa causes a huge tidal wave so large, it would have capsized the prom boat and killed everyone on it, including Ruby's friends, if Ruby hadn't caught it in time.
