  • The Angry Ones, the spirits of air and darkness, relentlessly pursue kinslayers to drive them insane. They don't care if innocents get caught in their way, either. They're apparently vultures with bat's wings, black skin that's been scorched by the fires of Chaos, and red mouths.
[Pirra] couldn't remember a time when she hadn't feared the Angry Ones. Everyone did: priestess, peasant, slave. The Angry Ones have always existed, and they always will. They are the shadow that follows you at midnight, and the dread that turns your dreams to nightmare. When you wake in terror of the dark, or your skin prickles with fear but you don't know why – then the Angry Ones are near. They come from the Chaos before the gods, and they hunt those who've murdered their kin. You might ward them off for a while by muttering an ancient charm; you might even evade them for a time by disguising yourself, or fleeing your homeland; but sooner or later, they'll find you, and scorch your spirit to madness.
  • The Outsiders:
    • While Hylas is adrift on The Mediterranean Sea, a shark appears to circle his boat. A wave then smashes the boat during a storm, leaving for Hylas only a plank to sit on. He would have made an easy evening snack for the shark if not for the dolphins.
    • Spirit is on the verge of dying when he's stranded on the beach. Things aren't pretty when told from his POV; with no Sea filtering the Sun and cooling him off, he's suffering from extreme hotness and dryness. Being out of water is for the dolphin like for a human to be squashed by heightened gravity; he feels so heavy that even breathing takes effort. When Hylas and Pirra finally manage to drag him to the Sea, he vanishes for a while and they're scared their efforts were too little too late before he resurfaces good as new.
    • Hylas and Pirra end up being trapped in underground caves by an earthquake. While searching her way out, Pirra discovers the bodies of the Vanished Ones, the island's inhabitants who were also trapped by a cave-in. Their bodies have been calcified to reflect their final agonizing moments in a similar way to the people of Pompeii.
    • When Hylas is posing questions to the statue of the Goddess, one of the stone statues at her feet comes to life and attacks him.
    • Spirit, eager to show Hylas the world beneath the sea, takes him underwater and almost causes his friend to drown before he realizes Hylas can't survive under the sea.
    • Akastos claims that all the earthquakes we've seen throughout the book are nothing compared to the true wrath of the Earthshaker.
Akastos: …you're wrong about the Earthshaker, Flea, He didn't wake. That was the merest twitch of His tail in His sleep. When the Earthshaker wakes, mountains crack apart and spew rivers of fire, and the Sea attacks the land… When the Earth-shaker wakes, you'll know it.
