What happens to anyone who touches an Onyx Shard with their bare hands.

  • The opening, in which elven king Xaius and his second-in-command are seemingly winning a battle against the forces of shadow, only for the enemy to summon The Dreadlord, an unstoppable looming beast that they have no chance of winning against. All they can do is die fighting and hope that somebody avenges them someday...
  • In Book 1, Chapter 2, Kade grabs the Onyx Shard with his bare hands, causing him to be sucked into the void and end up in the Shadow Realm, but not before we see an expression of terror on his face as he's trapped in the shard.
  • Baldur's horrible treatment of his brother Aerin is Realism-Induced Horror incarnate, complete with several allusions to physical abuse, eventually driving Aerin to become corrupted and murder his brother in cold blood.
  • While in the Shadow Realm in Book 1, Chapter 15, Raine and their party encounter a member of the Shadow Court by the name of Baron Vostrasz. He's quickly revealed to be a sadistic torturer who subjected Kade to cruel torture For the Evulz, did even worse to Loola the Nesper for a lot longer, and even murdered his own sister.
  • In Book 1, Chapter 16, if Raine doesn't stab Nia (who has been possessed by the Dreadlord) in time, he will take full control of her body and dispatch Raine and the rest of their party violently, leading to a Non-Standard Game Over.
  • The bonus scene of Book 1 has Raine having a nightmare about things to come, including a vast army known as the Empire of Ash, Whitetower being utterly destroyed and in flames, and what is implied to be a giant skeletal dragon that's big enough to blot out the sky itself. One scene in Book 2 suggests that even Valax (the Princess of the Ash Empire) is terrified of this thing.
  • In Book 2, Chapter 10, Raine and their party help Cherta find an amulet that will cure her grandmother's illness. Unfortunately, her grandmother absorbs too much Light from the amulet during the ritual and gets warped into this monstrosity. It gets even worse in the next chapter when jagged tentacles start growing out of her back and she attacks her own granddaughter, forcing an Elder to reverse the transformation, at which point Cherta is told that she was already beyond saving before the ritual.
  • In Book 2, Chapter 13, we finally meet the Shadestalker, the fan created boss monster, which is truly a terrifying sight to behold, with all those tentacles, not to mention the eye in the middle of its chest, which it can use to control the minds of others. In addition to pursuing Valax relentlessly and not letting up, either her or Raine will fall to its mind control vision, depending on whether Raine attacks it or not.
    • If Valax falls under its mind control, she will attempt to attack and kill Raine in spite of the binding spell that Nia put on her that inflicts agonizing pain if she hurts Raine, who desperately tries to snap Valax out of it.
    • If Raine falls under its mind control, they will attack Valax regardless of the choices you make, with only the third and final one allowing Raine to snap out of it. Notably, the first choice has the three available options as "Kill her", "Kill her!", and "KILL HER!"
  • Book 2, Chapter 17 ends with the Ash Empress showing up to the Light Realm...through a massive hole in the sky, riding on a monstrous skeletal dragon, and out for blood.
    Ash Empress: Kill them all!
  • The Sequel Hook of Book 2. Regardless of Raine's final choice, Nifara is unhappy and unmakes The Watcher before planning to go after Raine and their allies. The book ends with this chilling speech:
And so the servant ends as he began, a well of Light, like a dying star. I wonder. What are you made of, Raine? And what will you become? Will I tell your story before your end? (screen fades to black) See you soon, Realm-walker...
