Notably, his story about being a national-level chess player as a young teen started this off. By his own admission, he didn't put a lot of effort in and just enjoyed the game, but a natural talent meant he ended up in national tournaments with potential Cambridge University students. Despite falling off later, when The Boys suggested a tournament arc OVA, he clearly knew chess the best and played incredibly well. He lost in the final to Garnt, who better embodied the 'plucky protagonist' archetype by that point.
